Hello guys, I have just bought a Dell precision 7730 laptop, it was expensive but I picked it for reliability
the problem I have is this.
if I'm using the headphones, say while watching you tube and disconnect them the Audio comes from the laptop speakers, as it should, but when I plug the headphone back they dont work sound is still from the speaker...I used Dell service and the lady updated bios and drivers and said it should be ok. however if I want to use headphones T MUST plug them in before booting the laptop, you can tell I'm upset the machine is only a week old and cost £2,700 with vat.
do you think it's software or could it be hardware, I'll contact Dell again Monday, & thats a trial in it's self ...lol..
oh and it's ver 1809 O/S Big Grin
sounds like a bad driver

My recommendation... locate the device driver by going to "device manager"(Type 'device manager' in the Windows search or Cortana box. Wait until you see the blue box pop up above that says "Device Manager" .... Right click on the blue lit up area and select "run as administrator" Click "Ok" locate and find the sound driver... when you get there, first "update driver" if that fails... delete the driver, and reboot the PC. The default driver will be re-installed automatically, unless the PC has been deliberately disabled, for some highly irregular reason, deliberately.

In this case, I recommend these videos from Britec  Videos   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldqFdcGL1X0          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jY2-mGlMsRo&t=712s           https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PINnUnbeBmY&t=27s    are three videos i highly recommend, before taking the drastic steps mentioned, MAKE CLONES WITH ACRONIS, put them in the drawer for C: drive, and forget about it!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzT7HltVx8Y

comptoom, on Friday I phoned Dell, one of their Teck;s ran my computer remotly, she updated Bios, removed some drivers and installed new one's .the problem is the headphones only work if they are pluged in before booting. if I remove the headphone plug it of course reverts to speakers, BUT if I re-plug the headphones while the computer is on, the headphones fail to work. I have to reboot while they are pluged in, this machine is only 2 weeks old, cost "2700 and I'm gutted..
I will ee call Dell on Monday as they are not available over the weekend, although my warranty
states 24/7.. ,thanks for replying compton I appreciate it.
thanks Brian Smile
I think to know what the problem is

  1. plugin   headphones
  2. open sound settings
  3. right click on the headphone
  4. select set as default  device

that should fix the problem

sorry compton it did not work , but it was worth a try. perhaps this laptop only works like this.
but I have never come across this problem before, surely you should be able to unplug the headphones, and plug them back without rebooting.
any way compton thank you for your efforts..... Brian
can you take a photo of sounds settings like above
Idont know how to do that compton but i followed your reply
and set to default .. Brian
