 Azn everyone,
just wanted to share my experience the other day.......plugged in my external USB harddrive, got "Windows could not find installer for volume.." clicked twice on the error and then got ............" Your new Hardware is ready to use" very strange and I looked in computer management  still nothing , umm strange frustrating what to do  ?

Found a fix on the Internet ...............copy the sfcfiles.dll from i386 folder to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32. That worked out for me. Hope this helps other members and you can get on with just accessing your files. Take care.

If anyone can shed  more light on why this happened  and what exactly was going on I would be extremely happy to know.

tmy

Windows Could Not Load Installer for Volume

Problem details:
You may find yourself in a situation where you receive this error message: windows could not load installer for volume in windows xp. You may want to try this solution

Solution details:
We will want to replace the files sfcfiles.dll, storprop.dll and syssetup.dll in the windows\system32 directory. Open a command prompt by clicking START, then RUN, then typing CMD and clicking OK. Type in cd c:\windows\system32 or cd %systemroot%\system32 if your system drive is any letter other than C:. Type COPY %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\dllcache\SFCFILES.DLL . /Y and press ENTER. Then type COPY %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\dllcache\SYSSETUP.DLL . /Y and press ENTER. Then type COPY %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\dllcache\storprop.dll . /Y and press ENTER. Now type EXIT to exit the Command Console and restart your computer. That's IT!

The problem might be caused after your computer was infected.

Ok here's another solution:

   1. Put in my XP Home disc and entered into Recovery Console
   2. copied and expanded the sfcfiles.dll from the XP disc to the Windows\System32 directory (initially I just copied over the dll file, thinking that would solve it, but on further investigation, you need to expand dll files. The super techs among you will already know this, but as I didn't, this step is crucial, and can help others out there.

     Type the command expand d:\I386\sfcfiles.dl_ c:\Windows\System 32

     Type the command expand d:\I386\syssetup.dl_ c:\Windows\System 32

     Type the command expand d:\I386\storprop.dl_ c:\Windows\System 32

or

     Type in cd c:\windows\system32

     Type the command expand d:\I386\sfcfiles.dl_

     Type the command expand d:\I386\syssetup.dl_

     Type the command expand d:\I386\storprop.dl_
