Hello,

  My first post here.

I have seen the guide that shows two methods of making an old hard disk ready to move to a new motherboard.

http://www.briteccomputers.co.uk/forum/motherboards-bios-cpu/move-windows-xp-hard-drive-or-change-motherboard-without-reinstalling/

The two methods on that link seemed run together.  Could you clarify please?

You can also do a repair install.

Hello and thanks for reply.

Details of what's needed is the drive from a Sempron on a Biostar board
with DDR2 is to be used on my new MSI with DDR3 and an Athlon II x3.

( I haven't made the cpu purchase yet.)

So if the old drive-- I would be using the backup -- is installed to the MSI board with the Athlon, I could run Windows repair install?

As I recall, Repair install makes the warning that all data will be lost on the target drive.

Please clarify this point.

You will not lose data on a Repair Install all it does is put windows over windows.

Ok,

I was looking at your tutorial and saw that others had the same question.

I'm considering using the Disk Copy program by Paragon software to do this disk migration from one motherboard to the other as an alternative.

For your version of repair to migrate the HD, what precisely is Slipstream sp3?

I have not used MS updater in years.
