Is the drive recognized in computer management? and in device manager?
If it is recognized

1.In computer management > storage > disk management
2.Right click drive 1 or wathever the number of your WDC drive (which should be basic at this time)
3.Select 'convert to dynamic disk'
4.Drive should get a drive letter
5.Format (warning: all data get lost, but you can download original software from wdc.com)

Thanks for the quick reply,
The drive do not appear in disk managment?. But in the device manager it shows up as a unknown device.
When connected to desktop ,windows does attempt to install drivers,But i get an error message as follows "DEVICE DRIVER SOFTWARE WAS NOT SUCCESSFULLY INSTALLED
I have connected another usb drive to the same desktop, and everything works as it should so it cannot be the os or the usb port. I have even changed the usb cable
the power light is on so im assuming its getting juice, but the drive itself donot appear to be making any noise.im coming to the conclusion that the drive itself if faulty or damaged what do you think?.
many thanks Smiley

From what I have seen using eSATA connection does not work propley in some Windows 7 builds
try using a standard USB cable and see if it works, you might need to uninstall driver...reboot with USB cable pluged in.

Sounds like a driver issue to me, has it ever worked? does it work on Vista or XP?

Solutions to try:

1. Update chipset drivers for motherboard

2. Update Bios

3. Try these links below
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976972

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/974476

4. is this a downloaded windows 7 version? (if so there was problems with download versions)
