Hello everyone and hope your well.

This past weekend I ran into a problem with one of my Hard Drives - I had accidentally formatted it which had some important data!! Shocked

Ok my first job was to use Test Disk to see if I could recover the partion and see if it would find it.  8 Hours latter  it said "Can't Open Filesystem File System Seems Damaged" and I saw some of the partitions that could ring a bell with the problem.

I looked around on Google and it was said that try and do a chkdsk on the drive didn't work.

So I asked around on other forums and they said to use Recuva which actually recovered the files, and now I have the most Joyous Task of sorting out all of the files.  With these file recovery programs why can't they include the sub folders where they where?

For future use what can I do if I was in this situation again? ( I know Image the drive) but would Testdisk would of done a better job?

Thanks for helping me out.

Rob

 Azn RobCharles1981

Welcome to the forum

I myself have used Testdisk and Recuva many times...and many others come to think of it, but the main program I use is getdataback
but I dont think it matters how you go about recovering data as long as you get it back.

Some software is better than others...but what is the best is down to the user I think.

With Testdisk

It asks you where you want to recover the data to a location ie C:\  for reference how do I change the path to another drive?

Generally, the recovered data should saved to another location differed from the original one. And another data recovery tool recommendation: Card Data Recovery.

how do I change the path to another drive?

When testdisk ask you:
"Are you sure you want to copy this_file to the directory path? Y/N"

type N and then use the left/right arrow to navigate into your drives or folders to choose and change path.

When you are ready, type Y.
