hi everyone, I got given a toshiba tecra m1 laptop. The problem is, when I power it up the power light on front of the laptop comes on but nothing else happens. No screen and the hard drive isnt spinning up. Anyone help as where to start looking for the problem.

First thing to try is

Try to hard reset, by pressing the power button on laptop, until the laptop shutdown and then start laptop

Next try this

1. Remove power lead

2. Removed battery (give it a couple of minutes)

3. Place power lead back in with no battery see if it starts?

4. Remove power lead place battery in without power lead see if it starts.

So you dont get any display?

Can you see any backlight?

No fans spinning?

No hard drive sounds?

Next I would test hard drive, after that sounds like a motherboard issue. How old is laptop and how much did it cost? whats the spec? is it worth repairing? if its old and a £300 laptop with celeron then probley not worth repairing.

cheers britec,

Not sure on the exact spec, it was given to me as a broken one due to my mate had taken it apart and couldnt get it to start when he put it back together. Prob not worth fixing but was just hoping it might of been a quick fix. There is no back light, no fan sounds and hard drive doesnt spin up.

Hi there,

You might also want to make a couple of other checks. Check that the fuse and cable to and from the adapter are all OK. If you have a multimeter you should check that the output is what it should be, this info will be found on the underside of the adapter and should be about 19 volts.

If you do not get this output then the adapter is u/s and you will need a new one.

Since you were given this laptop you may not know when it last ran OK. If the adapter had failed at that time then it would have run on battery power alone until it fell below critical charge levels at which point it would have shut down since the failed adapter did not recharge it

However, if the fuse cable and adapter checks out OK then the power jack on the laptop is the next place to look. It could have a broken/loose connection in which case no power will be getting to the system and this will require a replacement power jack repair.

Check the fit of the adapter plug in the jack socket. Is it a good,firm fit or does it wobble about at all? If the centre pin in the jack moves about then this is a sure sign that the jack needs to be replaced since poor or no contact is being made and therefore no power to the system.

As Brian says however, depending on the degree of repair cost, it may not be a worthwhile prospect to repair it.
