PC is a Compaq SR2030NX with OEM WD 200 gb hd, running windows xp. System had been working fine with no previous symptoms when one day upon start up the desktop loaded fine but there was no cursor or mouse function, first tried another mouse with no luck. Rebooted machine, windows would attempt to load but fail, would then restart itself and try to boot again but fail, this continued to repeat itself over and over. Next I ran the preloaded Compaq diagnostics and received the following, Smart Short Self Test HD521-2W and Surface Scan Test HD535-2W. Next I beleive I tried starting in safe mode and received the following, "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ISAPNP.SYS." Have also tried starting with Windows XP restore disk and pressing "r", no luck but I do not recall what the error was. I then ran Western Digitals diagnostic cd, received error 0225 "Too many errors found." I have also booted from Ubuntu 11.04 CD and I was able to see hard drive but could not access it, received Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 13. I have also place hard drive in an external enclosure and again I can see hard drive when connected to laptop but when I try to access it a message prompts stating it has to be formatted to access.

Looking for input on whether hd is repairable and if not, advice on how to recover data. I am very much a "novice" at this so please try to explain in terms I can hopefully understand,
Thanks

Okay, yes, it appears the drive is significantly damaged. The first thing you want to do is clone the drive. Find a drive the same size of bigger and then use your favourite cloner to clone sector-by-sector to the working drive. If you don't know which software you like then I've used a tool on UBCD4Win called 'RawCopy' which works very well, is very easy to use, and is free.

I'm thinking one possible reason for the reason ubuntu not being able to mount the partition is because the partition is corrupt. So when you have cloned the drive, on the healthy one run 'Chkdsk /r' to try and repair the partition structure

Thanks for the reply, again I am a complete novice at this so need further explanation of how to clone. Do I purchase new 200 gb (or larger) hd and then install new hard drive in PC then install bad hd into external enclosure and connect to PC? How do I boot new hd without OS?

I went through the 16 pages of tutorials but do not see anything on erd? Did I overlook? I did find the following though and am wondering if this would resolve my issue as this is the same error I got at one time

http://www.briteccomputers.co.uk/forum/tutorials-and-how-to/how-to-fix-system32driversisapnp-sys/

judging by your reply you feel I should try to correct existing hd instead of replacing and cloning? I do not presently have xp recovery disk as it was preloaded on PC however I have a friend who can borrow one to me

there is a ton of great info on this site, overwhelming for a newbie though

Further confused... I have booted from xp cd, when I hit "r" at the welcome screen I am given the following options:

1: H:\MiniNT
2: H:\I386

Whether I choose 1 or 2 there is no C:\Windows prompt as mentioned

Regardless of which option I choose, the only thing that happens is it lists that option, for example: H:\I386 with a pointer (greater than icon) behind it.

Also when trying to boot from xp cd it doesn't always get past the blue set up screen, sometimes it will hang up while at the bottom left it says "Setup is loading files"

Looking for further advice? Is hd corrupt beyond repair? How can I recover data from hard drive? Please help?

Your have not compressed your drive have you?

Try the following:
1) Boot from the CD. Go to the Recovery Console
2) copy H:\i386\ntldr C:\
copy H:\i386\ntdetect.com C:\
3) Type: attrib -h -r -s C:\boot.ini del C:\boot.ini
4) Type: BootCfg /Rebuild

Restart see if it boots?

Next try  the following:

1) Boot from the CD. Go to the Recovery Console
Select Command Prompt
Type: chkdsk C: /p

Note: It will check the disk and attempt to repair corrupted file system

Also read the thread:
http://www.briteccomputers.co.uk/forum/windows-xp-support/cannot-find-dead-xp%27s-desktop~-forced-to-reboot-and-have-the-hal-dll-missing-983/

If all else fails try a Repair Install, worst case is that your drive is dying

Sorry, but I do not understand what you mean by "have I compressed my hard drive"? If I have I did so without knowing.

It is taking multiple attempts to get it to boot from cd. Many times it will get to blue set up screen and then get hung up while loading files. In fact sometimes now the cd tries booting but fails and black screen with error: system32\DRIVERS\isapnp.sys appears.

When I finally did get back to recovery it is still only listing the two options as mentioned before:

1: H:\MiniNT
2: H:\I386

Given the above options I do not follow where I am supposed to copy and type the information you provided earlier? Do I choose one or two or is this not even the info that should be displayed?

As previously mentioned I don't believe I have compressed the hard drive.

When I boot from cd and try the previously mentioned suggestions I do not see the options mentioned? Does this mean that my hd is trashed? If so can someone walk me through how to retrieve the info off of the hd. If it is not believed to be trashed, please advise how to access it.

Thank you
