I originally posted this in the Vista area not seeing this section.I have a Western Digital External Hard Drive. This is a 1TB drive that went down several days ago. It was unplugged unexpectedly while in use. After that my computer would not read the drive for a day. Then it did finally read the drive. I thought everything was fine but the day after that when I plugged in the drive it tells me that the drive needs to be formatted. So after a phone call to Western Digital it was suggested to me to use testdisk to extract the files that were on the hard drive and then reformat. I tried to fix the partition on the drive but it seems that is not working or I am doing it wrong. I found a video on youtube fron you on how to extract files from a formatted drive and that was working fine until the part where it asks where I want to save the recovered data. It did not give me that option with the version I was using. Also My screen was different than the one that was on the video. My version of scandisk is newer than the one in the video. So maybe that is why. The version I have is 6.12. Any direction in regards to this would be very much appreciated. I think maybe I should format the drive and then use this program but do not want to do that and screw things up even more. Any help or direction on this matter would be great. Do not want to have to take this somewhere and spend a ton pf money to rectify.
