[Solved] the request could not be performed because of an i/o device error - jay - 09-18-2014

hey britec i have a question. im trying to restore my desktop back to factory settings but at 90% or so i get an error msg that says "the request could not be performed because of an i/o device error' it happens on the second recovery disk.. im trying to restore it because when i try to log onto windows 7, it gives me a black screen after the log in screen and just shows my mouse arrow or it just freezes at the login screen. it also says kernel missing/corrupt then it takes me to this mega trends screen which iv never seen before.

i tried doing that already but now i cant even get past the boot screen unless i have the repair disc in. i noticed the mega trends msg, i googled it and it said something about s.m.a.r.t. that my hard drive is about to go out or is already bad. you think thats it? i have a new hard drive that i went and bought. i know how to install it but do i just load the discs now with it or do i have to do something else to that new hard drive? thanks for your time by the way.

We can test your S.M.A.R.T. hard drive first.

Please download CrystalDiskInfo 32bit  or  CrystalDiskInfo 64bit

Unzip and Run this program, you can take a screen shot or go edit then copy and paste in next post

i ended up just taking it to a pc shop so they could do it and they said it was the hard drive i couldnt figure that rufus thing out. so now i have my new harddrive installed, now what? just load the discs that came with my desktop? it has 4 discs first is system disc and next is recovery disc one and two, last disc is the language disc.

You took it to a shop and they installed the Hard Drive and never installed Windows for you with all the updates wow, they just dam right bad PC Repair. How did they charge? they should of installed Windows with updates and drivers and put a Antivirus on etc etc for a price.

no, i only took the hard drive for them to check if it was bad not the whole desktop, shure enough it was. if i would have let them fix it and everything it would've cost me $300 plus for all the work. them checking the hard drive only was $40. thats why i wanted to do everything myself haha. but good news i got everything working myself now, the only thing was when i re installed windows it gave me error message saying windows couldnt be installed and it kept restarting itself with the same error message. at this point i just wanted to throw my desktop at the wall but i eventually looked up how to bypass that by hitting shift+f10. took a bit but i finally got my desktop back up and running with the new hardrive working just fine. now the problem im having now is my windows does not want to update. "WINDOWS UPDATE CANNOT CURRENTLY CHECK FOR UPDATES, BECAUSE THE SERVICE IS NOT RUNNING. YOU MAY NEED TO RESTART YOUR COMPUTER". im ready to rip my hair out now. one thing after another. i tried this but it didnt work https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_update/windows-update-cannot-currently-check-for-updates/b250e431-cdfc-46ac-a044-eaaee17491cf .

oh ya i also tried this but still didnt work https://www.repairwin.com/fix-windows-update-cannot-currently-check-for-updates-because-the-service-is-not-running-error-windows-7/
