Does your system use Intel Rapid Storage?

Have a look in Device Manager.

RE: the request could not be performed because of an i/o device error - jay - 09-22-2014

no it doesnt say anything about rapid storage.

i also just ran the sfc/scannow as admin and its saying it found some corrupt files and was unable to fix them.

Have a look under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers for any Intel components.

Look for any yellow exclamation marks .

Open up a Run box and type "msconfig" minus quotations.
Look under Startup tab for Intel programs.
Look under Services tab for Intel services and check if they are set to start or not.

under the ide there is nothing that has a yellow exclamation mark. under the startup tab there i have something called RAIDevnt monitor, hd audio, comodo, adobe acrobat, avast, microsoft office. under the services tab i dont see anything called intel services. i have something called intel® matrix storage event monitor, or something called interactive services detection. but nothing called intel services.

sorry i took a bit to respond i was double checking making shure i didnt over look anything

Have you tried manually restarting the Windows Update service or stopping it and selecting restart?

1. Click Start > type services.msc then press enter.

2. Find Windows Update right-click, choose Stop. This service needs to be stopped so we can carry out next step.

3. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution.

4. Delete every file inside the folder. (make sure it's all deleted)

5. Now Reboot the computer, and try running Windows Update again.

6. Click Start > type cmd> right-click and choose Run as Administrator.

7. Type the following commands to register the Windows Update services, pressing the “Enter” key on your keyboard after each one:
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wuwebv.dll
regsvr32 wucltux.dll

8. Reboot the computer

9. Click Start > type services.msc then press enter.

10. Find Windows Update right-click, choose Start.

Now try Windows Updates.
