change motherboard without reinstalling windows
#1
Hello,  I am new but need some help.   Ive been watching some videos, great tutorials btw.  I am in need of some help.  Hang with me with this little novel here.  To start I had an older computer 2gig ram,  older processor, motherboard et cetra.  I recently purchased new motherboard, power supply,  processor, fan..   I watched the vid on how to swap motherboards and save the hard drive.  The important stuff is on that drive.  I don't want to have to reload everything.  I want to be able to click the desktop just like in the old computer... I am using the old hard drive, video card, and cd/dvd drive.  I loaded the bios and told it to boot from that drive, did not really change much inside there just told it which drives to boot first.  I started computer and I get the windows repair,  the computer starts brings up the windows icon then restarts and goes into repair.  (windows 7 64)  after it does the repair it says windows can not repair this drive.  I have done like 4 times.  ok so this is what I did.  I have an ssd 120 gig.  I loaded and fresh windows 7 on the computer on the ssd.  computer runs fine.  I then shut down and hooked up other drive from the original computer on it.  I can click into that drive and see everything, though some programs will not start everything is there.  pictures, favorites stuff like that.  the programs are there just there looking for the other motherboard of corse of which it is not there.   I would like to make that main hard drive work on this computer like it did on the other and is why I am telling you this story.  I do not know if it can be done and am asking for help, sure I can take it in to the local guy here but he is gonna say that cant be done you need to reload everything, of which that's what I want to avoid.

I just need to be  pointed in the direction of research so I can try to get back up and running without reloading everything.

Can it be done? Yes and No.

Going from a SSD boot to a HDD boot changes a lot of the BIOS settings so issues are always going to be apparent.

If it was HDD to HDD then yes it would be possible but not necessarily 100% of the time (hardware / software tolerance).

SSD to SSD yes but again maybe not 100% of the time.

It would be better to either save your files you wish to keep over to the new drive and format the old one,
OR
Buy a HDD caddy and use the drive as an external HDD.(you would still have to format it to use as storage)

Was the old computer a OEM Win 7 or a purchased Product Key?

oh thank you for replying. yes those were the ones but obviously, I did not do the drivers correct and the system is not recognizing the drive. the second video, the software needed not sure which one to get. I also need to let you know I installed windows on an ssd and the computer runs, hooked up the other drive I can see all the files but id like to make the original drive the boot up like it was before, I know ssd faster but still, idk if ive messed up anything in the uninstallation of drivers components so it cant be done. thanks for replying. just fyi boot up repair just runs, it gives me a report but im not that savy to know what it means.. it does however tell me to unplug the new hardware and try it again. again thanks for the help and reply so quickly.

I have the disc/key I think it can be done with the correct software just not sure which one. I watch one of the videos but went to that software site and they offer so many different ones.

I know its a pain to do, but sometimes you are better of wiping the system clean and reinstalling Windows. I made them videos because people wanted to know if it is possible. Like GS said Yes and No.

I have do this many times for people who insist on keeping the operating system as is, but its always nice to do a clean/fresh install from time to time.
