Disable Web Browsing
#1
Hi PeePs,

I need to disable all browsers on a PC.

explorer
chrome
firefox

*Without uninstalling them
I know I can disable explorer from control panel / uninstall windows ...

But I'm looking for maybe an easy little software program that might disable these temporarily, I would like to be able to turn them back on when I choose.
(and I need to still be able to Remote desktop into this PC, so dont wanna mess with Firewall)

Thanks!

  • You could use Barracuda Web Filter
  • You could use Group Policy Editor
  • You could use Firewall and block port 80
  • You could use a registry setting called NoBrowserOptions to restrict the use of the browser
  • You could use a proxy setting ( address 0.0.0.0 port 80) this will restrict access to internet.

Thanks for the response Brian.

I used "NoBrowserOptions" no good.
and the proxy settings. As for "Barracuda" I didnt want to buy hardware otherwise I would have used a Firewall.
I wanted it to be discreet.

Correct me if Im wrong but not every Windows version has "Group Policy Editor"

I don't understand, you want to block access to browsing the web and you I give you a number of answers and you say they are no good? what is no good about it? they all block internet access. Not sure what else you going to do.

If you are running Windows 10 and you want to stop another account on your system from accessing the Internet maybe the answer would be to setup parental access. Brian made a good video on this recently. You would be able to control which programs the user account has access to and or block Internet access altogether (for that account)

Remember! You should exercise complete CTRL and you ALT to think carefully before you DELete stuff willy nilly.

I had applied this one in the registry along side changing the proxy settings in the browser.
This one is no good because it leaves instructions in the browser windows on how to correct it, basically reporting the error.

"I used "NoBrowserOptions" no good."

btw this is Windows 8.1
