hard drive in enclosure
#1
Hi
I have replaced the hard drive in my mates laptop with a larger one and fitted the removed hard drive into a USB 3 enclosure.I have done all the usual wiping and reformatting of the drive to NTFS.I placed the files he wanted to back up onto it whilst the drive was still in the docking station connected to my windows 8.1 pro machine before i fitted it into the caddy.
The puzzle is this,When i connect the caddy to my windows 8.1 machine all is well. The caddy is recognised in device manager and shows on the hard disc drives section of the pc where i can access and read the files upon it.But when i connect the caddy to either my or my mates windows 7 machines the caddy is recognised in device manager but will not show on the hard disc drive section of the pc so that the files can be read.Although the caddy is USB 3 it does say it is backwards compatible to both USB 1+2 i am also using the connection lead supplied with the caddy. This has me completely discombobulted.Has anyone got a solution to this please.

Take side panel off case and plug in a sat cable and then plug in the the second drive, the data transfer will be a lot quicker that using USB.

Hi Britec
Thank you for your response but i do not think you quite understand my problem.all the data is already on the drive inside a USB3 enclosure which when connected via USB lead to a windows 8.1 pc functions perfectly well.when the drive/caddy is connected to a windows 7 pc it cannot be seen in the drive list to be able to read the data.this caddy/enclosure is to be used as a backup for data and used on a laptop.as explained in my original post the drive/caddy does show in device manager but not in the hard drive section of "my computer".

Uninstall USB3 enclosure from Device manager in windows 7
then reboot your system

Try going into disk management and assigning a drive letter.
