Have you been offered the free update to Windows 10?

Yes you would need to upgrade 7 to 10 and then dual boot XP with 10

right; should i leave the xp drive powered or unpowered? i assume the upgrade will replace hirens bcd? and i'd have to reinstall hirens after all the 10 updates are done? and thanks a lot for all the assistance

Leave it unplugged and you will need to use easyBCD to rebuilt or what ever tool you use.
