can i use windows 10 32 bit license for 64 bit
#1
Hi. I have a PC that is currently running W10 32 bit, but is capable of running as 64 bit. Is it an easy/safe process to install the 64 bit version of W10?  I don't think I'll have any hardware compatibility problems. If it is possible will there be any issues with the Microsoft licence.  I got W10, like most people by the free upgrade route from W7. I have a licenced upgrade version of W7 both 32 bit & 64 bit.  I'd like to be able to do this as many games are now only available in 64 bit format.
Thanks, Dave H.

You cannot upgrade from a 32bit operating system to 64bit. You will have to do a fresh install of Windows 10 64bit

if you using single core processor, you can not use x64
if you using dual core or more processor, you can use x64

Hi, wrong of me to use the term upgrade, I do realise a new install is needed. Thanks Double clutch for the link, I installed CPU-Z program and it shows I have the following instructions MMX(+), 3DNow!(+), SSE, SSE2-3-4A, x86-64 & AMD-V. No reference to PAE & NX, But my processor is an AMD Phenom Quad core 9550, are the required instructions the same for AMD and Intel?
I am beginning to wonder if doing this is going to be too much hassle.
My other concern is whether the licence/activation will transfer over to the 64bit version?
Thanks

It's not possible to use the license of the 32 bit version for activating the 64 bit version.

gromitmk, I would request you to create threads on the appropriate forums please

Yes that Windows licence is valid for either 32 bit or 64 bit, you can use any architecture you want to use.

Important note: 1 license key. You can't install 32 bit on one computer and install 64 bit on another computer with the same license key and use both them computers on the same licence.

How to Switch from Windows 10 32-bit to 64-bit Versions - The following covers switching using build 10240.

Thank you,

Andre

UPDATE: With the release of Windows 10 November Update (1511), build 10586, you can switch directly to a 64 bit version of Windows 10 using your product key.

  • Switching to Windows 10 64 bit is free, you don't have to pay for it. As long as you have a qualifying Windows 7 or 8 or Windows 10 license, you are entitled to use it.

  • Switching requires that you perform a new installation, that means files, applications and settings will be deleted.

  • You will have to reinstall applications and native 64 bit drivers.

  • Backup before migrating: How to: Create a system image in Windows 10

Step 1: Download Windows 10 64 bit then create a bootable copy:

Step 2: Boot from the 64 bit Windows 10 install media, then perform a custom or clean install:
