How to Change from IDE to AHCI Controller in Windows 10 installation
#1
Brian....

I have been a long-time viewer of your videos and they have got me out of trouble and explained things to me and helped 100%

Is there any chance of a video explaining how to change from using an IDE controller to a AHCI Controller (in Windows 10) when the operating system has already been installed.

I have read somewhere that hard drives (and SSD's) become more efficient using AHCI controllers but I do not really want to have to re-install Windows 10 to see if it is worth the effort.

One of your little videos would be absolutely perfect!!!

Kind regards,
Mike

Hello Brian
Mike-m5 here, the originator of this post.
Sorry to say it hasn't worked for me.
I've had immediate problem in as much as my Award Bios on a Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 (rev. 5.0) MB does not show SATA mode in the Advanced section of the bios.
There are options in the next section of the bios, IDE to AHCI, which I have changed, but then the PC keeps telling me that there is no OS available.
Have then gone back to change the HDD boot order and still the problem occurs, no OS and will not boot.
I know there have been many issues with Gigabyte boards, so I am at a loss.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Kind Regards,
Mike

You have to make all the registry changes first, then reboot into BIOS and make the change to AHCI, did you do it that way?

Hello Brian,

In reply to your last post, yes, I did the changes to the Registry before altering the bios settings.

The bios changed the boot order and then the usual error message appeared, No Operating System, press CTRL/ALT/DEL

Having then gone back into the bios, the boot order had changed.

I altered it to correctly boot from my "C" drive and tried again, with exactly the same result that there was no O/S, reboot with the 3 finger command as above.

There doesn't seem to be the availability of changing from IDE to AHCI in the ADVANCED section of the AWARD bios, it does mention something about "On-Chip" in the next section where IDE can be changed to AHCI but then this is what is causing me the problem outlined above.

I think I need to look into the bios a little more to see if someone has previously raised this issue on the internet.

Thanking you for your continued help.
Best wishes,
Mike
