The laptop is a HP G61-110SA

When I press power button the screen lights up bright, so the back-light is working. I can even turn the brightness up & down with the keyboard keys. (When the windows 7 loads up). But I cannot see any image on the screen. I shined my phone flash on the screen but still can't see anything.

I plugged in a VGA monitor to the laptop and the display comes up to the monitor so the it doesn't look like the motherboard or chips are bad.

Could it be the data cable?

Off the top, sounds like your screen needs relapsing.

Before hand, you might try removing the power adapter and the battery,
hold down power button for up to 30 seconds, then only connect the power cable,
see if that helps.

This model seems to have an "inverter" so that's the first part I would replace.

The inverter is responsible for the operation of the back-light. The OP states the screen lights up. That would say to me that the back-light is OK and the inverter is doing it's job. Not sure what shinning a flashlight on the screen would do at this point. I would look at the data cable to be sure it is plugged into the screen and into the motherboard correctly. If would also try moving the cable around a bit while the laptop is in to see if that changes anything on the screen. Chances are you need a new screen however you can never rule out a faulty data cable.

Thank you for the help (and everyone else) I will check the data cable as I believe the inverter is working (or how else would the back-light be working?) I will try the data cable if not...then I will need a new screen Sad
