Laptop tick from motherboard and no boot
#1
Ok here's one for you.

This Laptop (Toshiba Satellite C50-B-1CD) Is not turning on at all, it won't even post and there is nothing that comes up on the screen. It was working fine until it asked to reset the time on and date on boot up then afterward it switched off and now it is doing this. When is the DC power connector plugged in the light at the front of the laptop flickers so I imagine it is getting power? The only problem is once the DC power connector is plugged in there is a ticking/ clicking sound coming from some a part of the motherboard (as shown in the video below, please listen very carefully with headphones or volume turned right up). There was no HDD, battery, or CD drive plugged in at the time of the recording. Nothing happens when I press the power on button, even when the HDD is plugged in and I press the power button nothing happens, the light at the front still flickers away but the HDD doesn't power up. I'm a bit stumped as to what it could be, all the connectors have been unconnected and reconnected so I know they are all plugged in correctly.

Any suggestions?

The power adapter works fine, I doubt it the laptop light would light up at the front if the DC adapter was faulty

Also... The link should be working now

the power adopter can be bad not because when you plug it in light up means the power adopter is good

it can still be bad try other power adopter or get it tested

dc power cable and connector on the laptop is receiving the right amount of power from my multimeter

Where the DC jack on the laptop plugs intop the motherboard it is reading 18v instead of the 19v that the charger has on output?

ok when you plugin the power adopter into the DC jack how much V are receiving from DC jack ?

when you test the power adopter myself without it being Plugin to DC jack how much V are receiving ?

No POST does not sound good. Hold power button down on laptop while the power cable and battery are unplugged to discharged and power and then try to power on. Make sure your getting correct power to the motherboard, try clearing the CMOS. Remove Ram and power on to see if there is any lights of signs of activating. You said you removed CD-Rom and hard drive.

From the end of the DC cable, I am getting 19.13v (It is a 19v charger)

Once it is then plugged into the laptop, I measured the back of the connector that the dc connector plugs into the motherboard to as shown below, the reading there is 18.71v

I've tried removing everything possible and draining the laptop, the ram etc.. I even took the motherboard out of the laptop and only plugged in the power to it and it still makes the tick noises just above where the ram and CPU are.

I think we found the problem the power connector on the motherboard that the DC jack plugin is faulty

that's why you are only getting V 18.71 which would mean you will have to replace the motherboard

I doubt it's the DC port.

18.71v is perfectly acceptable, you will always get a slight variation in voltage 'just because'. It's well within acceptable power limits.

If you're getting strange ticking sounds from MOBO and the battery isn't charging ( you didn't say if it was or not ), then it's likely to be a fried or frying chip on the main power circuitry. If that is the case and you can identify the chip, you can de-solder / re-solder a new one.

The ticking sound tends to be a chip 'popping' from inside out ( nothing explosive ) but complete failure is very near.

At least that's would be where I would be concentrating untill I could find another reason.
