Net Neutrality vs Open DNS
#41
well I think what will happen is that ISP will not block websites but will control the speed at which you can access a website

think of this way Partha you have an internet speed let's say -20 down and 10 up using a VPN don't make your internet speed faster

it will make it slower because it will have to encrypt data

the same thing will happen if Isp control speeds to websites using a VPN will make it slower

vpn won't make the Internet  faster by any means but, it can be used as a workaround for cases where the ISP throttles the speeds for certain sites

If the ISP throttles my net speed for a site,  say abc.com, I can use a vpn to bypass that

yes but the Isp can tell you are using a VPN because the data is encrypted and then throttle the internet speed in general

so the ISP will win in any case Partha

If they throttled speeds when connected to vpn servers based on the encrypted data,  then yes but not all the ISPs would want to implement that idea

Remember that the https traffic is also encrypted and so it won't  be feasible to throttle all the encrypted connections

It is not a sure thing yet, the ruling will have to be passed by Congress and may even go to the Supreme Court before it is set in stone. The big mistake that they made is... They never held a public hearing and ignored the people.

Well the way I understand it is that it would not matter who is accessing a certain site and from where, the speed at which all traffic accesses that site would be whatever fast (or slow) lane the owner of that site has paid for. This is all hypothetical of course as we are far away from any of this now if it even happens at all. The fact is it could happen.

let us hope that congress who has the last say in this matter, will indeed hear the cries of outrage by the public, and thus decide in favor of the people and not the fcc. who wants to pay more for access when many of us are already paying high fees with our isps like comcast. we are paying nearly 120 for a 2 year package deal. cable/internet.

btw, was wondering off the wall here...could a tor browser work for accessing blocked sites?

My opinion about Tor may differ from others, but I stay away from Tor because it could open a whole other can of worms when it comes to security on a Windows machine. I would do as much research on Tor as possible and get familiar with Linux before going that route...

This is the live stream video (The Net Neutrality vote starts at 1:37:57) Both female Commissioners explain the whole thing very well.

Why would it affect this Christmas? It's not an instant implementation... It has to go through the process and may not even get to Congress until the middle of next year.
