Upgrade recommendations?
#1
Hi everyone,

Here is a list of my current computer specs:

Corsair - Vengeance Pro 32GB DDR3-1866 Memory
Intel-Core i7-4790k
Gigabyte - GA-Z97-HD3 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard

I want to upgrade/ update my current system to a DDR4 system, I have a good idea of which RAM and new motherboard I'd like but I've been trying to shop around for a CPU that supports RRD4 that is in line with the same performance or slightly better than my current 4790K, I don't want to go crazy with money. I was looking at an Intel Core i7-8700K but I think that's maybe a little overkill?

Would anyone be able to recommend a good DDR4 compatible CPU alternative to my 4790k?

Thanks

if you are upgrading the memory to DDR4 you need to upgrade the motherboard

Sorry I forgot to mention that I am upgrading the motherboard, I have a good idea which motherboard and RAM I'd like to buy but wanted some recommendations on a CPU that would be the same compared to my 4790k

I would go with i7-8700K https://www.amazon.com/Intel-BX80684I78700K-Core-i7-8700K-Processor/dp/B07598VZR8/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1514638303&sr=8-2&keywords=Intel+Core+i7-8700K

What are you going to be doing with the computer?

8700K  £379 New Architecture

7700K £299 Kaby Lake

AMD Ryzen 1800x  £329

8700K vs 7700K Benchmarks

Its going to come down to how much money you want to spend. All 3 CPUs perform better than your older CPU.
AMD 1800x is a real bargain and beats 8700K is some tasks like video editing but not by much. Gaming I would say the 8700K beats 1800x but not in all games.

I would not buy Kaby Lake now, because you are buying new motherboard, cpu and ram you may as well go new architecture.

This video will let you see the difference in all the CPU's

I would say its between 8700k and 1800x AMD or Intel. You pay your money and you take your choice.

Thank you Compton, and thank you Britec for going into detail. I do some gaming on my PC and some music production so I do need a pretty powerful system. I do like the looks of the 8700k. I also planned on getting G.Skill - Trident Z RGB 16GB to go along with it and I'm still shopping around for a new motherboard to go along with it.

just point something with AMD Ryzen 1800x don't come with an integrated graphics

so if you are on a budget keep in mind you would need a video card

I would go this motherboard

memory

Hey Ajaay27,

Because of what you are investing... I would change the cooler to something larger like an H100i v2, and instead of the WD Blue (Mainstream Drives), I would go with WD Black (Performance Drives).

How are you implementing the Samsung SSD's?
