Access XP Workgroup Shared Printer from Win 10 Home 1709
#1
I am new to the forum. I have asked this elsewhere, but have not resolved the issue.

I have 3 computers on a Workgroup. This is a wireless network. 1)AMD_XP (desktop running XP sp3), 2)Dell laptop running Vista Home SP2, 3)Lenovo running Win 10 Home. I have printer attached to AMD_XP it is shared. This set up has worked for 3+ years. Had a HDD failure on Lenovo, had it fixed and replaced with SSD recently. Now trying to access the printer from the Lenovo. It does not see the AMD_XP, but does see the Dell. The AMD_XP shows all 3 in Network. The Dell can access and share the Printer on the AMD_XP. The Lenovo (Win 10) gets regular updates.

All 3 machines are in workgroup "WORKGROUP". The AMD_XP is used primarily for Printing from the laptops. I can not get the Lenovo to see the AMD_XP, and thus can not use the printer. I am not a network person.

Bottom line --How to create a Workgroup with XP, Vista and Win 10 and share Printer that is physically connected to XP machine.

Any advice or assistance will be appreciated.

I did get a response to set up a Homegroup. And my response was
-It is my understanding that HOMEGROUP only applies for Win7 and upwards.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry for late replay, I only just noticed this post.

Thanks for replying. I will investigate that link further, however, I did see it before I first posted the issue.
Since my set up had worked for over 3 years, the only thing different was possible updates to my WIN 10 laptop since being on vacation for 3 months. The XP and Vista machines were shut down during that time. All machines are in the same Workgroup called WORKGROUP.
For background, the XP desktop has the printer physically attached; the workgroup was originally setup when I got the Dell Vista machine(2008); the WIN 10 laptop was added to the workgroup in summer 2014.

I could set up a Homegroup on win10, and try to add the XP, and Vista to it, but I really don't know if starting over is the best path at the moment. I was hoping that someone more knowledgeable of networks could advise on anything in recent Win 10 that would pin point the root issue. Perhaps there is nothing, but that's the only thing that has changed as far as I can determine.

Thanks again for replying.

I would just start with a clean slate and start over and get it working that way. That type of setup has always been a bit flaky at the best of times.

Just an update to say that I have resolved the issue.
I went to Turn Windows Features On and OFF
Had to check the boxes for SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support
and both Client and Server.
That installed some programs. After a restart of the WIN 10 laptop, the XP desktop and shared printer were accessible. I added the printer to the WIN 10 printers and printed a file from the Win 10 laptop.
Success.
