Slow Booting Computer
#1
This problem started a few weeks ago...Turn on computer get to Starting Windows screen...four colours meet and sits there for about 48 seconds. Then goes to a black screen for 38 seconds then white arrow appears and sits there for 50 seconds.

I then get...Please Wait for 25 seconds...then the Welcome screen for 48 seconds...then I get to my desktop for a total of 209 seconds and everything works fine after that. I have run...sfc...chkdsk... virus scans everything seems fine and all drivers are up to date. In msconfig startup I removed the ticks from programs I don't want to start with Windows but this made no difference.

My computer use to take no more than 90 seconds to the desktop...so guys how do I fix this problem as it's driving me nuts...it's a desktop computer with Windows 7 64 bit.

Hi Bill,

Have you tried Windows Startup Repair?

Have you checked the health of your hard drive? Run CrystalDiskInfo to ake sure your drive is healthy.

Hi Brian & Tim,

Ran Cystal DiskInfo...Health Status...Good and temp 31c. I ran startup Repair from the Windows 7 DVD three times and got "Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically".

I've had a few Windows updates in the last few weeks...maybe this has something to do with it ? Can't remember having this problem before...any other suggestions Guys.

I think I've fixed my problem (fingers crossed)...after pulling my hair out trying to work out why this has happened because no new software has been installed and I don't have a virus...sfc found no corrupt files either.

I Booted into the Windows 7 DVD and in System Recovery Options hit the Command prompt and entered these commands... bootrec /fixmbr and bootrec /fixboot removed the disk and rebooted.

Windows booted in no time at all...so over the next few hours I rebooted four times and got these results -

91 seconds 91 seconds 98 seconds and 88 seconds which is fine by me...better than 209 seconds the only thing that's been installed over the last four weeks or so have been Microsoft updates and this problem started about four weeks ago. I know people have had problems with Microsoft updates in the past...looks like I'm another one...what do you Guys think.

Could be that you have something loading at start up. If your problem returns I would try disabling start up items through msconfig and see if you can narrow down which one may be causing delays.

Brian,

The Hard Drive I have Windows 7 on is 500 GB...when I installed the OS because the motherboard is UEFI I was given an option of MBR or GPT.

At that time I didn't know what GPT was so I ticked the MBR box...I know now that GPT is for HDDs over 2TB if the HDD was 3TB what commands should I use ?

I don't think bootrec /fixmbr and bootrec /fixboot would work as it would be set to GPT...bootrec commands seem to have fixed the problem on my MBR 500GB drive.

It seems some of the Microsoft updates have stuffed up the MBR in some way is that possible ?

Aren't Microsoft updates suppose to make the OS better ?

Windows GPT contains a protected MBR which is why bootrec commands still work.

It is possible and has happened in the past on some machines usually due to a hindrance in the install process (unexpected shutdown etc..)

Nah. That's an urban myth Wink LOL
