USB Keyboard & Mouse don't work in XP
#1
Ok so here is a scenario I have run into in my shop like 8 times in the past 3 months. Customer brings in their old XP box that ONLY has USB ports. No PS/2 whatsoever. For whatever reason (bad hdd, extreme corruption, customer request) we end up doing a wipe and reload. We do our due diligence perform the clean install, install all drivers, and all windows updates. Now here is the problem. The customer gets it home plugs in their USB KB & M and immediately is prompted with install new hardware boxes to install the 2 devices. But with neither working there is no way to do it. KB&M don't work in safemode, normal mode, etc. They bring their pc back and 1/10 times I can use the exact same KB&M that I used during the install to install theirs. 9/10 times mine dont work after having been disconnected and reconnected either. The ONLY way I have been able to succesfully fix this is to do a full repair install with their KB&M attached and then windows adapts to them. Anybody that can help me with this would be my hero. I have Google'd to no avail. Have tried all forms of BIOS legacy settings depending on what the PC has. I typically find this on old Dells. I currently have a freshly loaded Dell Optiplex 320 that I intentionally did this to so I can try any suggestions you may have. Thanks!

Make sure you have USB Keyboard Support "Enabled" in BIOS, also you can use a virtual keyboard.

I have read that article. Thanks though. :-) My problem is this is happening immediately after a fresh load of Windows. I could try doing a fresh load and installing updates one by one selectively to try and figure out which one causes it but I was hoping for a better solution lol

Everything USB is enabled in the BIOS and the keyboard and mouse I use to do the installation continue to work until I unplug everything and then plug them back in or plug in any different keyboard/mouse. Which leads me to believe more driver related than BIOS or hardware.

A simple solution is to use a USB to PS/2 Keyboard and Mouse Converter Adapter

or PCI USB + PS2 CONTROLLER CARD - 2 Port USB 2.0 & 2 Port PS/2

I have not tried one of those USB ones, but I have that exact PCI card and there are not natively drivers in XP for it, so back to square one another device I cant install without a keyboard/mouse. And my ultimate goal here is to send PC's back home to customers confident any keyboard/mouse will work on them.

If it don't work when it gets back to customer, its got to be a USB driver issue? another thing I have seen people say it don't work and get it in my shop and it works a treat, then send it back to customer and it stops working again, visit customer and they have loads of USB hubs drawing power, so this is another problem. XP is so old hat now days, I would not work on them, because there is no support for that OS.

When you resinstall, do you install SP3, because you will need drivers for USB Mouse and Keyboard to work correctly, once these are all installed problem should be solved. Slips stream all your Windows discs with all the latest updates.
hccoin.dll

usbehci.sys

usbhub.sys

usbport.sys

Another thing I would consider doing in future if you are going to continue working on XP is to use this Windows XP SP4 Unofficial  its clean and virus free.

Hope this helps.
