A few months ago I started using linux Mint 17 Mate on my old computer...I have found so far it works very well and is just as fast as windows 7 but without the many problems Microsoft operating systems have.
It has a real start menu and doesn't have those stupid tiles that windows 8/9 have and of course no blue or black screens of death either.

Ubuntu is full of spyware. Look it up. That includes the Ubuntu knock offs like Mint. I use CentOs and Manjaro. Linux is getting mainstream enough that it has taken on some bad qualities in spots. It's best to stay off the main paths just like everything else. I would honestly suggest MAnjaro for a first timer although CentOS is bullet proof.

I personally Use CentOS because it has a robustness for both Server and Consumer applications. You can run a media, file, web server with CentOS. I use it to run gaming servers as well as serve web pages. If you are a techie and you want to dabble in CentOS this is the one for you. If you are just starting out with Linux Ubuntu is the way to go.

I tried Mint, Debian, Ubuntu, Lubuntu, XBuntu etc and I would say Linux Mint is the best out of all of them. I still hated it because Wine would never run my important windows applications properly.

If you are new to Linux, I would recommend Debian or Mint, if you are advance user - Arch, Fedora, Suse and finally if you are Linux guru - Gentoo, Slackware or LFS.
Personally I use Hardened Gentoo on my desktop workstation, Gentoo ~x64 on my laptop and Debian Stable on my second laptop.
If you want to run software from Windows, don't bother running it in Wine, instead find Linux alternative, most open source software is available on all platforms nowadays, so you shouldn't have any problem using it on Linux.

I'm curious DekoG, why do you run Hardened Gentoo?

I see.
I only ask as I've seen it used mainly as a Server side OS as opposed to a standalone system.
