Repair a damaged or corrupt Word document

Need to repair or fix a corrupt Word document? Sometimes a Word document from a different version of Office or after being transferred from a different computer, will give you an error stating that the document cannot be read because it is corrupt or because there is some problem with the file.

Usually it’s just a problem with the headers in the file and you can recover most of your Word document most of the time. Here are the error messages you might see:

Word was unable to read this document. It may be corrupt” or

The Office Open XML file Test Doc.docx cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents

How to fix corrupt Word Document

To repair a damaged Word doc, open MS Word and click on File and then Open as if you were normally going to open the file.

Now select the file you want to open by single-clicking on it, do not double-click the file. Now instead of clicking on Open, click on the small arrow at the far right of the Open button and choose Open and Repair.

That’s it! Word will repair the document and open it for you.

Note: Now if for some reason the built-in repair feature of Word does not work, you can also download a free program that does uses some more advanced techniques to repair corrupt Word documents.

Repair My Word is a great little freeware app that can not only help with the corruption errors but also with Word errors such as

Hi Brian,

Yeah,he suffered a double whammy, an unresolved problem and feeling light in the pocket too just adds insult to injury.
What you did for them is commendable, I bet your their first port of call the next time they have a problem.

I've lost count of the clients who had a bad experience at the hands of the same lot, cost 'em a bomb and waited ages for what was a straight forward repair job. One that I remember clearly from last year had wanted to upgrade her memory so she bought it online and then phoned the tech guys for advice on what to do next. Their reply to her was literally to "just shove it in and everything will work OK" wow!
So she shoves it in and Bingo! PC won't even P.O.S.T, beeping like mad, and won't even run with original memory, same result.
She then calls me with her tale of woe at 7.30 in the evening, she is desperate etc,etc so out I go. This is when I discover she got wrong type of memory, this plus tech guys 'just shove it in advice' wrecked her PC.

After considering the cost of further repairs plus what she had spent on new memory she decided to cut her losses and get a new PC. She engaged me to supply the new machine and set things up for her for which I charged my usual fee but did'nt charge her for the late call out(normally I would have done so)since she had been given bad advice.
