Hi there,

What dannyjks means is,does your Anti-Virus application that you are running have an option to turn on Real Time Scanning,  i.e. does it scan in real time, like right now?
always assuming of course that you have the PC turned on and you do have an AV installed.

For example, Microsoft Security Essentials AV has this option that you can turn on or off. It is always good practice to have it turned on so that if something nasty gets on
your machine it gets flagged up immediately so you can take any action needed straight away to neutralise any bad effects it may try to do to your system.

Adobe, PDF Files,Flash, Java are some of the prime targets of hackers exploiting the security flaws in these apps. Always make sure that you have the latest versions of
these apps and also, just as importantly, that all older versions are removed from your system.

Cheers,HTH,

Yes ,I have AVG antivirus .

Ticker, once you said update some apps, does this really prevent some body from seeing or hacking my pc???I try to download the pdf it is only 2516k but it does not complete downloading ???This  man is a networking teacher ,so I think that??
Do I need to remove the apps from add/remove programs then install new version OR had enough with updates..??

Hi there,

First of all open up your AVG antivirus and negotiate your way to the settings page in the program and make sure that the option to allow Real Time Protection is ticked.
This means that if you come under attack from a virus etc,AVG will spot it right away and deal with it. How AVG deals with it depends on how you have set up AVG, the virus may be quarantined or deleted or it may ask you what you want to do, just go through the set up procedure for AVG and make your choices.

It is most important to remember that AVG and any other AV application is not 100% certain of catching every bad thing that attempts to infect your system. Hackers are constantly finding ways around the most sophisticated security protection methods. This is why it is of the utmost importance to update your AV before scanning, since if a new virus is on the loose, your AV will not know about it if you have not updated with the latest database signatures and even then, if your AV provider is unaware of that new virus then you will get infected even with Real Time Protection enabled. Real Time Protection is just another layer of security but it is not infallible. Just have it enabled.

Second, updating the applications I referred to does not prevent your PC from being seen or hacked or from getting infected. Having the latest version of any application is always the best policy. The reason that software providers update their software, apart from improving the program, is because known security holes/flaws in the older version have been fixed. But hackers/virus writers also know that users leave all sorts of old stuff on their system and so they continue to exploit that fact and therefore you will get infected if you still have this old stuff on your system.

Adobe Reader for example is regularly being updated or a newer version comes out simply because, in a lot of cases, hackers are finding newer ways to exploit the flaws they find in it. Flash Player, again regularly updated, is notorious for leaving behind older versions of itself when you get the latest one and so,again, are prime targets for hackers, same with Java.

Here are a few links to some little apps that will get rid of this junk and help to make your system a little safer

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Macromedia-Flash-Player-Uninstaller.shtml

http://www.adobe.com/ Latest versions of Adobe Reader and Flash from here.

Download and run them, you do not need to use Add/Remove them. I hope this has been some help to you.

Cheers,HTH,
