Where I work, we fix computers and most of the incoming services that we have are "virus removals". I'm not sure if anyone knows this but my co-worker showed me how viruses can lock up the internet and cause you not to be able to access it. He went to command prompt, then C:/Windows/system32/drivers/ect .. after that he had me type: show something i can't remember. Does anyone know how this works, and what it tells you about the virus on your computer.?

What your co-worker is referring to is the HOSTS file which is located in this folder C:/Windows/system32/drivers/ect.  Some virii will hijack your HOSTS file and the effect of this is that when you go online you will get redirected (without your knowledge or permission of course) to some other web site at which point you will have a ton of bad stuff downloaded on to your system, and Hey Presto! you are now infected.
