Hi,
I can usually fix viruses and things myself from checking the net for info. In this case I´m not sure what to look for.
Firstly I think the culprit is a program I installed that allows you to control your pc from your mobile, its called phone my pc, if this is the case it was a hacker.
If it wasn´t that I just updated flash player, maybe this has a problem with it I don´t know about (nothing showed up in a google search though).
What actually happened was, my kids were playing online games on google chrome broswer in the morning before school, after dragging them away we closed the browser and left the pc on. When I got back nearly an hour later the pc had the black screen showing windows startup options, safeboot etc. and was restarting everytime booting failed.
I have windows installed on my d:\ partition aswell for such cases, so I can access the c:\drive for repair, but its not showing up on the os selection screen.
When I boot from the windows cd it says the c:\partition is corrupt!
I have been looking around and trying things with no luck, and I will continue, but it would be nice if someone could recommend a solution, without loosing my data (wife would not be happy!!....photos!!)
Sorry for going on, thanks for your time.

Colin.

Oh I forgot to mention, I recently had a virus on my netbook from that google redirecter virus, which I got from using google chrome, I have suspicions chrome might have something to do with it if its not the other things.

Hi,
I´m afraid I can´t even start Windows, so I can´t do any scans. I need to take a different approach.
Thanks.

Sorry Colin I did not read the post properly
you can try a bootable cd like these

http://www.briteccomputers.co.uk/forum/virustrojanspywaremalware/free-bootable-antivirus-rescue-cds-download-list/

We will also need to know what the error is and system details

Hi thanks for the replies.
I can´t get into safe mode or last known settings that worked. From all my attempts it seems the c partition is corrupt, that could probably mean alot of things though.
I tried booting from a pendrive with a copy of boot.ini, ntldr and ntdetect, when I done this I got the hal.dll missing error, so I put a copy of that on the pendrive and it said the c partition is corrupt or something. I can repeat any of these attempts for exact error messages if you think it will help.
One thing I would like to point out is, I have had viruses etc. before and I decided to have an install of windows on the d partition, that way I could access my data from the windows running on the d partition and possibly fix the infected c partition. Anyway I don´t know how to boot up that install of windows now, usually I can tap f5 on boot up, select return to os choices menu and the two installations of windows would be there? but there is only one, maybe if someone could show me (step by step) how to edit the boot ini so it boot up the windows from the d partition, I could work from there...
In the mean time I´ll see if I can make a cd as suggested above.
Thanks alot.

Oh and I´m running xp sp3.

colinmc8 ;

download your self a copy of windows xp recovery and burn it to cd using a iso burner

http://www.briteccomputers.co.uk/forum/software-reviews/iso-recovary-cd's-downloads-update/

once you have this cd restart the computer keep pressing 12 and then selct run from cd dvd

once you are in then get all your photos off the hard drive and back them up

Remember always backup backup backup

once you have your data recoverd we can then help you recover the system using other tools.

once the softwear has gone though the setup load insert a pen drive into the computer before you load onto the desktop

that way you can save all you photos it is a pre installed enviroment and you can do other nessersery backups

once you have done this let us know and we will tell you the next steps

Ok,
I got the cd (I´m using a netbook so had to get the cd elsewhere) got in but can´t access my C drive. Using the Explorer I get "Error performing inpage operation." The D drive is all there (the other windows installation)
Now I am at a loss again! Could it be that the whole drive has been corrupted?

Just a extra bit of info.
I right clicked on the c drive and went to properties, the file system is showing up as a few strange symbols and th used space is showing 372.75 TB!
I don´t know if this helps?

You can read about Error performing inpage operation here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;141117

It sounds like your hard drive may be failing Error performing inpage operation is a sign of bad sectors, clusters, sometimes chkdsk /r can fix this error.
i would suggest backing up all data as soon as poss incase your hard drive is bad.

Here is some more info

Cannot copy: Error Performing Inpage Operation

Symptom:

1. When copying files from a diskette or CD on a Windows computer, you may occasionally experience an "Cannot copy: Error performing inpage operation".

2. When trying to open a file from Removtable hard drive or CD, you may receive this message: "Error performing Inpage operation"

3. In some cases, you may be able to copy small file but not large file.

4. In other cases, you may not be able to copy using Windows Explorer while using xcopy works fine.

Causes:

1. This error usually indicates physical problems on the media.

2. Additionally, errors caused by network connectivity can cause these errors.

3. Mismatched MTU sizes or truncation of a packet at a router can result in this error when files larger than the largest packet size are copied over the network.

Hope this helps you out.
