I just started to use the Norton Recovery Tool.  Let's say that some new virus defs. come out an I wish to add them to the disk, do I have to start over from scratch or is there a way to add the defs. directly to the disk?  TIA.

You boot your troubled system using the Norton Bootable Recovery Toold CD/DVD , that allows your system to boot into a safe environment, you will/should have internet access in this environment too thus allowing you to update and run any scanners you so wish.
You do not need to download a new copy of NBRT every time, In that sense it is not like MS Standalone System Sweeper

This may be of interest to you, it gives you some info on what the NBRT is and does.

Most of the tools like Norton and alike do make it so it is safe to update and then run the scans . Then hope return your system to normal upon the re-boot that it asks for at the end.
