Hi,

Thanks in advance for taking time out to assist me.

My laptop PC is a Dell Inspiron that is running Win 98 4.10.2222A with 128 MB ram.

I am having an issue with my PC that starts with a Rundll32 error. Most threads I've read regarding the Rundll32 error indicat most are caused by virus's. I doubt that this the case with this pc as it hasn't been connected to the internet in over a year. This is an older pc that I use for older legacy programs. It has been rock solid up to now and has very few application programs actually loaded on it.

Today when I booted it up I received the "Enter Network Passwork" dialog box as usual but then an error dialog box poped up, "Rundll32" "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down." When I click on close it then goes away and I can enter my Username and Password. However, once I do this the signin box goes away as expected but I receive a new error dialog box that says "Runonce" "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down." When I click close my desktop appears but I get another error dialog box that says "Scanregw" "This program performed an illegal operation and will be shut down." When I click close I receive another "Rundll32" error, then a "Atiptaxx" error and then a "Ati2cwxx" error and then a Osa9 error and then a "Sltalink" error and then a "Systray" error. When I close this one, the error dialog boxes stop appearing and I can run my application programs with out noticable issues. Most of my programs communicate with PLC's via an interface board in my PCMCIA slot so I suspect that when I attempt to actually use them to communicate which I haven't done yet, I'll discover issues. I also noticed that when I attempt to click on any item on my control panel I receive the same "Rundll32" error. I also receive it when I attempt to Shutdown and when I click Close it just takes me back to my desktop and I have to hold to power button to shut it off.

I have not installed any programs or made any modifications to this pc for over a year.  Can any one help me with this problem?
Thanks again.

Welcome to the forum

What was the Rundll32 error message?

also do you want to turn off ENTER NETWORK PASSWORD at startup?

How to Prevent a Windows 9x, Me Logon Prompt at Startup

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;152104

Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, Network, and make sure you have "Client for Microsoft
Networks
" installed with "Primary Network Logon" set to "Windows Logon".
When the password box appears, enter your name, and leave the password blank. Click "OK". Do
NOT
close the window out any other way except "OK".
If it asks to confirm the password,
again, click "OK". The password box should not pop up again.

Hi,
Thanks for your response.  I'm not sure I understand your question " What was the Rundll32 error message".  Basically what I see is what I've described unless your asking about what it says when I click Details on each error.  Is that what yu mean?  As far as the Enter Network Password login prompt, that doesn't bother me.

Hi,
Thanks again Britec for your quick response and help.

I cannot turn off the ENTER NETWORK PASSWORD since everything I click on in my Control Panel gives me the Rundll32 error.  I even tried booting in safe mode and although I didn't get all of the same errors, probably because it doesn't load everything in my startup in safe mode, i still get the Rundll32 error whenever I try to run any thing in my Control Panel.  Thus, I can't run Network to shut it off.  Any more ideas?

If you have cab files on the hard drive, such as c:\windows\options\cabs you can restore from there:

Option 1

Using SFC to extract files

1. Go to Start>Run and enter SFC and click OK
2. Check "Extract one File"
3. Enter the file name and click on "Start"
4. In the "Restore from" field enter:: D:\WIN98 [if 'D' is not the letter of your CD-Rom drive, modify appropriately]
5. Click OK

{if you do not have a Windows system CD, try subsitituting c:\windows\options\cabs in the"restore from field"}

BUT, as this error is frequently associated with the results of viral infections or their removal, you are well advised to do a scan.

Also it is important to know when you are getting the error -- on startup, or when you attempt to run any program?

Option 2

In order to replace the Rundll32.exe file, try the following:

Click the Start Menu
Click 'Run'
Type sfc and click 'OK'

When the System File Checker (SFC) opens, choose the option to extract a file. Specify the Rundll32.exe file. You will need to have access to the Windows 98 CD or the installation files copied onto your hard disk if you've put them there.

This might be of help to you

http://www.briteccomputers.co.uk/forum/win-98-me-support/using-system-file-checker-in-windows-98/

Also try this:

Go to Start>> Run > Type in: cmd (or command) [Enter] You will now be in the DOS command prompt screen:

To install/register the file type in: regsvr32 file.dll or regsvr32 file.ax (where 'file' is your file name) [Enter]

A message should be displayed confirming that you've successfully registered the file.
