My computer is a;
Acer Aspire X3810
4GB DDR3 RAM
1TB HDD
ATI Radeon HD 4350 Series
Windows 7
-------------------------------------------------

I was using my computer and all of a sudden it crashed. So I turned it off by holding down the power button on the base unit. It started back up as normal and then it came to my log in screen, so I typed in my password and it comes up saying "WELCOME" as usual but hangs there for 10-15 seconds, and then just goes to a black screen.

I restarted it again by holding down the power button and tried booting in to safe mode which came to the same results. I then tried restarting it again by holding down the power button and this time pressed the "Repair Windows" option. It came up and searched for a problem but it found nothing wrong with it.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Hi Alan;
as you are able to use safemode the best thing to try first of all is safemode with command prompt and see if it loads correctly.

if this loads the do a check disk scan you can do this by typing in

chkdsk /f /x

and check the hard drive is not at fault

what was the last ting you where doing before the computer crashed?

do you get any blue screen of death at any point?

Dose it give you any messages as to why it can not load?

I would say at this stage without investigation that it could be the hard drive has got some bad sectors on it or possible corrupt winlogon.exe

dose the computer make any strange nosies when you turn it on it sounds more like hardware that softwear issue

what was you using as a anti Virus?

let us know and we will help you out

Hi BJseal91

I may have not worded that well, what I meant to say was that safe mode does not work either.

To answer your questions;

I was browsing the internet (youtube I think)
I don't get a blue screen of death, it just stays black.
No messages appear.
I've not really listened for noises. I will try again and post back if I hear any strange noises.
I was using Microsoft Security Essentials for my Anti Virus and I also had Malwarebytes Pro and SuperAntiSpyware Pro.

*EDIT*

The noises from the computer sound the same as they always do.

When its on the black screen I can still see my cursor and I can get into the Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del

I took down a note of the processes;

atieclxx.exe
csrss.exe
dwm.exe
taskhost.exe
taskmgr.exe
winlogon.exe

------------------

Is explorer.exe not missing?

Can you run explorer.exe?

Open task manager and Go to File and click run new task. Then type explorer.exe

Hi tf76

I get an error message when I try to run it saying; "Windows cannot find 'explorer.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again."

I pressed Browse and found that there was nothing in the Windows folder called 'explorer.exe' but there was one called 'explorer_backup.exe' so I tried running that and I never got the error message but it never added it to the Procceses list or changed anything.

Interesting. Can you go to msconfig utility?

What happens if you press win key by itself?

If it comes up go to run and type msconfig. Then go to startup tab and tell us whats in there. Could be something that's running at startup that is causing this.

If you can post an image it would really help.

At this point I would say do a System File check .

The sfc /scannow command (System File Checker) scans the integrity of all protected Windows 7 system files and replaces incorrect corrupted, changed, or damaged versions with the correct versions if possible.

Go to task manager again and file run new task and type in cmd.exe. Then type in sfc /scannow and press Enter.

If this doesn't work we can try a system restore if you had that function running.

I'm going to bed now, but I'm sure the other guys like Bradley, Brian or Ticker will help you. It could also be a virus or maybe driver issue.

Hope all goes well. It's 2am here in SA. I'll come by tomorrow to have a look at how things are going.

I get a message when I run cmd.exe and type in the command saying "You must be an administration running a console session in order to use the sfc utility."

I also tried the System Restore but that diden't change anything.

Thanks for all the help tf76. Cheesy

I have just tried pressing F8 and going to Repair Your Computer and I noticed that you can open the command prompt as administrator, so I have done that and tried the sfc /scannow command and its saying "There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart Windows and run sfc again."

What does it mean run "sfc again" just open it back up and type in the command again?
