Cleaned out the prefetch folder, but not exactly sure where to go to access the registry. Do you think you could guide me to it?

Hi there,

In the Registry there are four possible value settings that determines how Prefetch will run, these are the settings and what each one does.

CAUTION:Before making any changes to the registry make sure you do a back up of the Registry first.

0: Disable
1: Prefetch when an application runs
2: Prefetch on startup or bootup
3: Always Prefetch

To open Regedit do this:

1.   Click>Start>Run>Type regedit in the box>OK

2.   Navigate to this key:

   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters

3.   In the right hand pane, look for the EnablePrefetcher entry and click it to highlight it.

4.   Click Edit>Modify and in the Value Data box enter one of the values noted above. Do the same in the EnableSuperPrefetch entry also.

What value you choose here effects windows start up time. A Value of 1 will give the best results in terms of start up time but a slight lag in application start up, a Value of 2 will slow start up time but your applications will start faster. Choose whichever suits you best.

5.   Click OK and exit out of Regedit.

Cheers,HTH,

ticker

I've found my way to the registry. I was able to change up the values for the prefetch parameters, but I couldn't find the startup delay under the content index folder. Could that be my problem?

okay so I changed the values on "EnablePrefetcher" and "EnableSuperprefetch" both to 2. There's just a slight boost of performance but still not to the point where the computer's performance is optimal or tolerable. I haven't tried speedupmypc yet. Will need to look for that and try it out. Thanks

I downloaded the program and had it run a scan before I decided to purchase an activation. It found over 200 issues. I was wondering if there's a free program that's similar to speedupmypc that I could try before I actually purchase this particular program

Thanks

Just a quick question about speedupmypc: Can I install multiple instances of it on more than one computer w/ the same key? I've read their FAQs and didn't seem to have anything on it. I was just wondering if could put it on my laptop and once its done repairing that, reuse it on another computer.

I've activated speedupmypc and I noticed a change in performance but when I shutdown my computer and restart my computer it takes a very long time to startup and shutdown still. What do i do now?!

Remember to back the the registery first

File

export

save to desktop

filename.reg

go into the registery and locate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop

Look for 2 Values

1. WaitToKillAppTimeout (Default 200000)

2. HungAppTimeout (Default 50000)

once you have found these values change waittokillappTimeout to 200

and change HungAppTimeout  to 500

once you have made the changes search for waittokillappTimeout and HungAppTimeout in the search bar at diffrent times because they are in serval locations.

once you have finished exit the registery and restart the computer

let us know how you get on thanks

I went to the file directory and couldn't find the registry values you told me to look for. Neither WaitToKillApp Timeout nor HungAppTimeout was there. Could that be my problem? Or is it just somewhere else?
