I get "access is denied" even when I run command prompt as administrator. Looks like a good idea though. Perhaps I should try to do it while running the computer on another OS (BArt PE?), to give me access? (using my spare USB CD drive as a second CD drive)... would that work?
Interestingly though, I might need to file this info away for a while because I am getting a "remote visit" from a software engineer later today and s/he might be able to do the very thing you suggest, so I'll get back to you.
Also (crosses fingers) I noticed that the system has been "feeling" more stable since I unplugged the USB expansion drive. I have a feeling that my computer is unhappy with some of its USB drivers despite the fact that when I tell the system to update each of the USB drivers in device manager it says I have the most up to date ones (Driver Agent disagrees but their suggested alternatives don't seem to have any effect).
Life's complicated, innit!?

If you look at your dump file you can see the files that are giving you BSOD, one was to do with your graphics card driver I would uninstall that driver and download a new copy and install it. That was your last BSOD, also check your Event Viewer.

Hi Crossing fingers, your kind help and also the help from the recent remote visit may well have sorted the thing out. (I installed the latest drivers I could find for the graphics card and also the audio card before his arrival and the remote engineer subsequently did a few other things). Many thanks for your help in all this, it certainly gave me useful direction :-) Interestingly, a couple of pointers that the remote engineer gave me was not to use Tuneup Utilities and Driver Agent - well - maybe that's all to the good, since the former was making so many changes to my system that I couldn't keep track and the latter was getting me to download drivers that were unusable ... hmmmmm
Out of curiosity, following on from my discussion with him - how do you rate JV16 as a registry cleaner as compared with Toni Arts easyclean?

To be fair i dont use registry cleaners, they can do alot of damage to the registry. If i need to clean registry I do it manually.

Doing it manually sounds scary to a non-pro like me. Do you have a list of "do" and "don't" for that?

Well always backup registry before you start to mess around in there. only delete stuff your sure of. make sure you know what your doing in the registry before even entering it.
maybe best for you to stick with registry cleaners, untill you learn a bit about the registry

PS Easeus still classifies my other drives (D and P) as unformated, but it continues to use them with no complaints....

It seems that the problems were not down to the memory (and possibly not to drivers) after all but to the BIOS settings Having changed the BIOS settings in accordance with their suggestions the memtest then revealed no errors. However, I await further developments. I just hope that this has solved the problem. This apparently relates only to ASUS LGA1156 BIOS (settings for 133Mhz RAM) .... for the record - I went into BIOS settings, went to Ai tweaker, set Ai overclock tuner to manual, changed: DRAM frequency to DDR3-1066, DRAM voltage to 1.50, changed DRAM timing control as follows CAS# latency to 9 RAS# to CAS# Delay to 9 RAS# PRE time to 9 RAS# ACT Time to 24 then in advanced on CPU configuration disabled C1E support, Intel (R) SpeedStep (TM) Tech and Intel (R) C-STATE Tech Then pressed F10 to save and reboot
Now most of this is a mystery to me, I just followed their recommendations, so I'd be interested in any techie feedback in this regard. But meanwhile, at least, it appears to have done the necessary without the need to change memory sticks or to do a clean reinstall. I have to say, I have not yet (and may not bother to) replace the ASUS HDAV soundcard.... since I'm waiting with bated breath to see whether all is now well with the system as it is.
