so im trying to use bootrec.exe from a boot disk to fix my mbr, everything was working proporly, exept the program couldnt find my operating systems. it said i can install drivers to find them but i dont know what drivers to install. i actualy did this on my friends laptop and it was my first time working with ubuntu.
plz help

Hi Welcome to the forum

It can mean several things. I will list some below which you can try yourself:

1. The hard drive itself is bad. Try going into the BIOS and see if it's recognized.

2. The master boot record is corrupted. You will need to run fixboot or fixmbr to try repairing the boot record. The problem here is that you will need to get into the recovery console to do this.

3. Hard drive cable is loose. You will need to open up the case and reseat the hard drive cable.

Fix MBR – Operating system not found

1. Start PC, Insert Windows 7 DVD and hit a key when asked to. You may have to change your boot order to boot from DVD!

2. Click on “Repair your computer“:



The installer will scan your PC for previous Windows installations:







4. Click on Command Prompt  in order to run the desired utility which is called "bootsect.exe". Bootsect is located inside the boot folder so change your directory to boot. Now run "bootsect /nt60 C:\" if you had Win 7 initially installed in the C partition.
Alternatively, you can run "bootsect /nt60 SYS" or "bootsect /nt60 ALL" to repair the system partition or all partitions. Eject the DVD, and restart computer. Your computer should now boot Win 7 again.

so a few odd things happened, it probably has somthing to do with my newbdom


i troubleshooting those first steps you gave me again, reassured me that iwas the mbr. i got a bootdisk for fixing boot sequences, but i couldnt use it because the software wasnt finding the drive, after i unpluged my external harddrive it worked fine and the program picked up on the c: drives existance.

i hit the self repair and it said that i had an external device plugedin, i definatly didnt.

so iwent to the cmd

i hit in your instructions, it still didnt work

then i found this

after doing the instruction inthe vid,
after getting as far as "bootrec /rebuildbcd"
the console told me that it scanned and found a total of 0 windows instalations
also that it was successful  DX


so then i punched in your recomendation without rebooting and now it works.

so i feel like i should learnsomthing from allthis, but i still dont understand.

what did i do?

i dont really know what you been doing with your pc for this to happen.
But you did say something about ubuntu which is most likely what has messed up you
MBR.
