How to Access Hidden Windows 7 Themes

Windows 7 contains different theme packs for different regions. When you install Windows 7, you select the language, time zone, and currency format. This determines which themes are available to you by default. Being from the US, scenes from different states in the US, such as Washington, Wyoming and Maine, are available to us.

However, there are four other theme packs pictured in the following image that are hidden from your use.

Accessing all the themes is easy to do once you know where to find them.  They are hidden in the C:\Windows\Globalization\MCT  directory.  The MCT directory within the Globalization  directory is hidden so it will not display even if show hidden files and folders is enabled. However, for this method you do not need to deal with the hidden files settings.

To access the hidden themes, open Windows Explorer, type or copy and paste the full path to the MCT directory listed above into the address bar and press Enter. You can also enter the directory into the Search box on the Start menu.

Once you have accessed the MCT folder you will see five directories as listed below:

    * MCT-AU
    * MCT-CA
    * MCT-GB
    * MCT-US
    * MCT-ZA

The directory within each MCT directory that is named for the region (for example, United Kingdom) contains wallpaper files (.jpg) that you can grab and use.

To view and use the theme for each region, open the Theme subdirectory and double-click on the theme file.

The theme is added to the My Themes section in the Personalization  module of the Control Panel as pictured at the beginning of this post. If you live in the US, however, and you double-click the theme pack for the US, it will be added to the Aero Themes section. We were unable to test if the same is true for the other regional theme packs.

More themes for Windows 7 are available at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/downloads/personalize.

Enjoy...
