Hey, I was just wondering.  I download a lot of ChattChittos applications, and I had relized that he uses a sfx.  But you do not need a password to run it, you only need a password to extract the files or open the files if you open it with WinRAR.  I am working on a User Friendly FFMpeg application for people who do not totally understand the command line parameters, so I am using batch files (Set /P) to ask them what they want to do.  I don't want it to be able to be edited unless you have the password.  I don't want to just rar or zip it, cause then the files will be assessable to ever one.  But if I have it in a sfx, all they have to do is double click it, and it will run.  But if they try to open the archive and extract the files, a password will be prompted to be typed in.

I don't know exactly if it is WinRAR, WinZIP or 7Zip.  But I know one of these or possibly another one can do this.  Does anyone know how to do this?

Thanks.

How to password protect with WinRAR

     1. Open WinRAR, choose the folder or file that you want to compress by clicking the "Add" option.
     2. Select the "Advanced" tab and choose "Set Password" option.
     3. Once you have finished entering your password, you can choose to encrypt the file name by checking this option.
     4. When you are done, click "OK" and apply the changes by clicking "OK" again in the Archive parameters window.
     5. Anyone trying to open the rar file wont be able to, unless he/she knows the password

That is a rar format and you have to extract it to use it.  I said for it to me a sfx, witch is a windows executable that you can either set it to run a file when opened, or to be prompted to choose where you want to install it to, like an installer.

Thats right you can use WinRar to do that. set password and create a SFX Archive, you will need to use password to install program.

I had to get rid of the browser hijacker that I had.  And if I put a password on the sfx like that, then you have to know the password to run the application.  What it will do is, I will set it to run a file once it is open, so it will basically be like an .exe.  The password part is for if they open it with WinRAR and they try to extract the files, then it will be asked for a password.

I will give you an example of what I mean.  It is a file that I downloaded.  It was made by ChattChitto.  It is his gui to install winzip Pro.  Be aware, it has audio. Nothing will install when you open it.  When you open, a window will come up asking you if you want to install or want to see the key.  Now on to my part, if you right click on the file, and go to properties, you can see that it is an archive.  And if you right click on the file and click open with WinRAR, it will open.  But if you try to extract the files that are in it, it will then ask you for a password for each file.  But it does not ask you for a password if you want to run the whole archive.  How do you do that?

I am also looking to accomplish this. Basically I have seen the ability to run a SFX without password but upon extraction it will prompt for password. The only way that i have been close to solving this is via reversing the EXE file with Ollydbg and adding a code cave for the password routine in the SFX portion but not in the extraction portion. This is a major pain in the ass, so does anyone have a quicker solution???
