laptop but the laptop can't see the files on the desktop.  (I get this problem once in a while.)  Does anyone know of a fix for this?  TIA.

Sorry it doesn't work.

BTW now I can see the desktop from the Laptop but cannot get to the files.  The error message comes up that the network path is invalid.

are you using different passwords on the lan?(desktop/laptop) you also have to active the share function for both your laptop hard drives and desktop harddrives. Are both computers in the same workgroup? check the field workgroup under network settings
