Hello,

I realize that this problem has been talked about, so I apologize, but I am having problems with the fix for it.  We have an OEM HP Pavillion a6123w Desktop w/ Windows Vista.  Yesterday afternoon it wouldn't startup, gave the BOOTMGR MISSING error.  I don't know where our discs are that came with our computer (we recently moved, lots of boxes to look thru)  but I do know that we don't have a Vista disc.

Anyway, I downloaded a recovery disc and we tried this: http://www.briteccomputers.co.uk/forum/tutorials-and-how-to/fixing-%27bootmgr-is-missing%27-error-while-trying-to-boot-windows-vista/msg445/#msg445

However, there is no OS listed.  I tried the solution (going to Install first and then going back), it asked for the key, and then it gave a new error of Sources/Install.wim does not exsist.

Tried going back and having it find the OS again anyway, but there was still nothing there.

Tried making a new recovery disc, still same error(s).

Also tried using DOS to do a manual repair using the disc, it says completed succesfully but when I shut down and restart bootmgr is still missing :(

I found something about trying to use Windows RE to try to fix it but I have no idea how to get to that?  Help please!  And thank you!

Ok just an update - My brother installed his hard drive w/ Windows XP and made my hard drive slave to see if we could save any of the information on my drive - It doesn't show anything on it but a Windows folder with a small amount of stuff, and another folder that says something about error 0x4001001300001002.  So I assume my hard drive somehow got wiped clean?  :(  Is there any other reason we wouldnt be able to access the files/pictures/etc I had on there?

your need to take ownership of the folder to look inside it. and if your data has been wiped your have to do data recovery to get data back

here is a tutorial on how to take ownership of your folder

OK thank you!  We will try that and see what happens.  In case my data has been wiped how do I go about doing a data recovery?  I was stupid enough not to back up our files and we have hundreds of pictures on that drive that we have no where else, not to mention quite a few important files....we havent had a problem since we bought it 3 years ago so there's a lot! :(
