So Ive tried making the CD from your tutorial, it didnt work as the laptop didnt recognise the OS. I was wondering whether switching to Ubuntu would be a quick fix for this... that way the bootMGR would go away....

Azn , realy cool forum btw.
Ye, im using vista 32bit at the moment and I got the BOOTMGR is missing sign out of nowhere so I tried to do a system recovery and wipe all of my data but I got error:1002, every time I tried. so thts wen I found your video on youtube and tried tht but the laptop cant find the OS Im using.
I was thinking of changing my OS anyways, so to get rid of the "BOOTMGR is missing" could I jst install ubuntu (linux) and reboot my computer.

What is the name and make of your computer?

If you are using recovery disc...then these could be damaged or your backup disc that you made maybe currupt or its possible that your hard drive maybe bad.
it is also possible that some other hardware in the computer maybe faulty.
before you start formatting your hard drive to install ubuntu (linux), I would suggest that you do some tests on the hard drive first to make sure all is ok.

also try these

Run System Restore at each of these locations on that menu:

1) Safe Mode
2) Safe Mode with Networking
3) Safe Mode with Command typing %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
at the command prompt.
