Hi, last night I was prompted to update with servivce pack 1. However since then the computer will no longer boot to windows. When I use my vista recovery cd, startup repair either concludes that the problem cannot be fixed or hangs indefinately. If i try to boot without the cd a blue screen momentarily flashes up which is so quick I cannot read it and then restarts. I notice on a seperate post it is possible to "slipstream" a recovery disk with sp1 already installed. Would I be able to create this disc from another computer running XP. My last question would be can I somehow copy my data from this drive to another computer so as not to lose my files, and the installed programmes for which I didnt recieve recovery cd's. I hope this makes sense. Any help will be very gratefully recieved. Regards Rob.

Have you tried a system restore from something like UBCD4WIN to restore it back to a time before that update sometimes if you go into the os from an outside cd follow the path C:/Windows and make it show hidden files and folders you can see folders marked in blue $NtUninstall folder these are all your updates from windows delete the one that caused the problem. Let me know if that works???

Hi Rob Have you tried to boot into Safemode?
Uninstall Windows Vista service pack from a Command Prompt
Note: If you have used the Disk Cleanup Wizard, it may have removed some temporary installation files which are needed to uninstall the Windows Vista service pack. If this is the case, this method may not work for you.
This section is intended for advanced users. Use this method if you are running the prerelease version of a Windows Vista service pack, or if you cannot see the uninstall option for a Windows Vista service pack listed in the Program and Features window. If you cannot see the uninstall option for the Windows Vista service pack, you may still be able to uninstall the service pack at a command prompt. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Open Command Prompt window. "Run as administrator" 2. Run the following command, as appropriate for the version of the Windows Vista service that you want to uninstall: * For Windows Vista Service Pack 1: C:\temp\Windows6.0-KB936330-X86.exe /x:C:\temp Collapse this tableExpand this table Note This command assumes that the Windows6.0-KB936330.exe folder is in the C:\Temp folder * For Windows Vista Service Pack 2: C:\temp\Windows6.0-KB948465-NNN.exe /x:C:\temp In this command, NNN represents x86, x64, or IA-64. Collapse this tableExpand this table Note This command assumes that the Windows6.0-KB948465-X86.exe folder is in the C:\Temp folder. 3. You have to create a sandbox environment before you can continue to step 4. This helps you safely run an untrusted program. To create a sandbox, type md sandbox. 4. To remove the Windows Vista service pack, type, or copy and paste the following command, as appropriate for the version of the Windows Vista service that you want to uninstall:: * For Windows Vista Service Pack 1 start /w pkgmgr.exe /m:c:\temp\Windows6.0-KB936330-X86.cab /up /s:sandbox * For Windows Vista Service Pack 2 start /w pkgmgr.exe /m:c:\temp\Windows6.0-KB948465-NNN.cab /up /s:sandbox. In this command, NNN represents x86, x64, or IA-64. 5. After Pkgmgr.exe finishes, you are prompted to restart the computer to complete the uninstall process.
If these steps successfully uninstall the Windows Vista service pack, and this resolves the issue, you are finished. If these steps do not uninstall the Windows Vista service pack, or if these steps uninstall the service pack but do not resolve your issue, you will have to restore the system to a previous state.

Hi, and thanks very much for the suggestions. I cannot start windows in safe mode. If I open a command prompt through the repair centre and enter the first line of text, "C:\temp\Windows6.0-KB936330-X86.exe /x:C:\temp" I get back " The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect. After leaving the computer running for several hours this afternoon trying to boot, a blue screen with the following information appeared.
STOP: c0000218 (registry file failure) the registry cannot load the Hive (file):\systemroot\system32\config\SOFTWARE or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.
collecting data for crashdump.... initialising disk for crash dump... beginning dump of physical memory dumping physical memory to disk:100 physical memory dump complete.
I have no idea what any of this means. Startup repair utility says it cannot repair this computer automatically. it the lists information about this problem.
Problem signature Problem Event name startuprepairV2 Problem signature 01 ExternalMedia problem signature 02 6.06000.16386.6.0.6001.18000 problem signature 03 6 problem signature 04 589833 problem signature 05 Bad Driver problem signature 06 Bad Driver problem signature 07 0 problem signature 08 3 problem signature 09 WrpRepair problem signature 10 10 os version 6.0.6000.2.0.0.256.1 locale D 1033
Again this is pretty much all greek to me, thankyou for your time and patience. regards Rob.

Ok you got big problems now :(
1. Try using a preinstalled environment to backup your data or take drive out and put into another pc or caddy and backup that way
2. Depends how good you are at fixing computers because your registry looks corrupt (if you have restore points you can use them to fix error.)
3. You could slipstream service pack 1 and then do a repair on windows (but your need to slipstream sp1 first because thats on your system and your windows cd is only Vista with no service pack)
4. Not sure sfc /scannow will fix it, Might be worth a try (but again your need Vista CD with Service Pack 1 Slipstream)

First things, thankyou Brian for your wisdom.I will respond to your numbered suggestions.
1) I hadnt heard of a preinstalled environment before, would VistaPE be a suitable one to download? I removed the drive to put in a caddy and found it to have different connections. 2) With repair centre I only have one restore point which hangs and never completes final restore. Apparently when SP1 installs it deletes all previous restore points. 3) I am going to watch your youtube video again about slipstreaming, to get my head around it. As i understand it a slipstreamed recovery disc would be a recovery disc that already had SP 1 installed. Could I make this on an XP equipped computer? 4) SFC /Scannow initially starts then responds Windows Protection could not perform the selected operation.
Apologies if it appears I am coming back with more and more problems. again thakyou for your time. Regards Rob.

Build Windows Vista SP1 x86 DVD using vLiteVista SP1 can be installed in three ways: * Using Windows Vista SP1 pre-integrated DVD * Using Windows Vista SP1 Offline Update installer and * Via Windows Update. But Microsoft has stated that Windows Vista SP1 pre-integrated DVD can get only Microsoft partners, Business Consumers, MSDN & Technet subscribers and Microsoft Connect users. So there are only two ways to get Vista SP1 installed, but it take long time to install SP1 and terrible to install each n every time in fresh Windows Vista RTM. To solve this problem, I would like to thank vLite Developers and Community; they have released vLite with SP slipstream support and its simple tutorial that helps to slipstream SP in Windows Vista n build your Vista SP1 DVD. Requirements: * Windows Vista RTM DVD * Windows Vista SP1 offline update installer and most important thing is * vLite (Windows Vista has in-built .Net Framework 2.0) * WAIK or Windows Imaging DriverHow to:1. First of all, install vLite and copy all contents of DVD into HDD folder, say F:\Vista 2. Now select the folder where Vista installation source has been copied (F:\Vista) 3. Select the edition which is to be upgraded to SP1 4. Proceed Next and only select Service Pack Slipstream option. By selecting Windows Vista SP1 offline update installer, extracting and slipstreaming process will be started and it’ll take 60-90 mins to accomplish the task. 5. After completion, create bootable DVD or image and get your Vista SP1 installed simultaneously. (Only a single edition will be upgraded to SP1 at a time and to make complete Vista SP1….I mean, if you want to create all editions upgraded to SP1 disc. You have to follow the same process for each edition.) NOTE: Don’t select any other option such as integration, components, tweaks etc when slip-streaming service pack. One more thing, don’t remove any component from vLited Vista image because it may cause interrupted installation.

Brian you are truly awsome. A real credit to the internet. I really appreciate your time and wisdom. I have downloaded the updater, Vlite and the waik but i cannot find the wimgapi.dll file, do i need to install the waik to my pc which is running xp?. I am also concerned that my vista cd which is only a recovery cd once opened has fewer files than the one in the video. However I think I am almost there now and I would never have come this far without your help, so once again thankyou. I am just amazed that by simply updating with a microsoft approved update i have royally bricked my laptop. Regards Rob.

Hi Brian, unfortunately vlite wont work with a recovery cd. It was suggested to me to go back to the original 2 sticks of 512 memory the machine came with, which made no diffference. Now i am completely stuck. regards Rob.

Rob Go to this website below and download the torrant downloader www.bittorrent.com then once you have done that go to the following http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/download windows recovary disk .iso image Burn the iso image with a iso burner if you do not have one download a free standalone one hear http://www.freeisoburner.com/once download has finished at the torrent centre bearn Iso image to cd and boot from the cd and select start up reapair this should get you back into windows I hope this helps and you have the data backed up off of the hard drive before task rember boot from cd and that will then allow the cd to run and load up iso images are bootable and unless the disk drive is failing you will get into recovary Best of luck let us know how you get on

Thanks BJSeal, this is the recovery disc I already have which unfortunately doesnt help. What I have done at the moment is to run Knoppix live cd, I am typing from my previously bricked laptop using Knoppix right now. This has enabled me to retrieve my files. I am downloading a Vista installation iso, which I will then bootstrap with SP1. This should enable me to use windows recovery and get back to normal. Having said that I am very impressed with knoppix, its quick and easy to use and open office opens my excell files. It was my concern that I would lose microsoft office that stressed me more than losing vista. So if I cant get Vista back I will either go back to XP or play around with some Linux distro's. I will let you know how I get on. Regards Rob.
