I have a vista acer computer. I have tried to fix my computer by making a rescue disk and it didnt work and i tried to check the hard disk c and that didnt work. but Sometimes when I boot up my computer it says drive disk error occurred and then alt ctrl and delete and then I restart it and then comes back to the message again. Also there has been a screen where apparently a device or something has been faulty. I don't have a vista installation disk or whatever you call it to repair my computer. However, If I switch my computer off from the main switch which turns the power on and off and leave it for an hour or less then the computer works. What can I do?

Welcome to the forum

Is this the error your getting?

Issue: Non-System disk or disk error

One of the messages shown in this type of problem is given in the image above some other messages are like DISK BOOT FAILURE, NTLDR is missing etc.

There can be several reasons for this kind of error.

Cause:

    * Non-bootable floppy or CD present in drive
    * Corrupt boot-loader
    * Faulty Hard disk drive
    * BIOS or CMOS setup is not setup properly.

Let us see the fix for each of these.

Solution:

1. First of all, check floppy drive and CD / DVD drive, there should be no disk drive inside it when you are starting your computer. This is most common type of reason for such kind of problems.

2. If there is still problem even after removing all CDs / DVDs and Floppies , it is possible that boot-loader has got corrupt. In such case you need to repair the boot-loader.

    * For Windows XP, you can use a bootable Windows XP setup CD, boot the computer with bootable CD and run Recovery setup by pressing R key. This will boot the computer in recovery mode. You will see command prompt, on this prompt type “fixmbr” without quotes and press y to confirm , now press enter.This will fix the Master Boot Record.
    * For repairing Windows Vista Boot-loader refer this post.

 3. BIOS or CMOS setup is not setup properly. A) Verify that your hard disk drive is setup and detected properly in BIOS. B) Verify the boot options are properly set in BIOS.
C) Rest your BIOS to default values. Many BIOS will enable users to reset the values to the default settings. If you've tried the above options without success try resetting the BIOS.

 4. If you have attempted all above suggestions and you are still encountering the same issues, then it is possible that your computer’s hard disk drive has gone faulty. Sometimes this kind of problem is also faced due to over-heating of the drive. it is very likely that the hard disk drive is bad and it will need to be replaced.

If you have tried all above, its possible your drive is failing or failed, you dont have a windows cd which makes it harder to fix without one.
have you backed all your data up? if not dont push the drive to much because it could let go altogether and then your stuffed.

Its upto you what you want to do

1) try and get data off incase drive is bad

2) test drive and risk drive letting go at anytime and lose data

if the drive is hanging on by the skin of its teeth and you push it to much now it could pack up altogether and your lose everything.
if it was me I would try get data back first then run test and try and fix computer.
