Windows Vista Desktop with all updates, anyway yesterday whilst doing a system restore to the last good bootup (which was 3 hours before (system checkpoint), reason for the restore was I didn't like the software I had loaded, anyway whilst doing the restore, lo & behold we had a power cut in the area for about 5 hours, so then computer wouldn't boot at all, except via the Vista dvd, to the repair module where I followed your instructions on youtube (thank God I have a laptop), I done the bootrec mbr, also bcd, infact I tried most everything for  about 6 hours..........................to no avail, is their anything else I could try, because to lose my 250gig hardrive would be devastating to me. I did do a backup to a device called "ClickFree", about 3 months ago, but alas that's bloody useless. So I am in a quandary. My screen boots to jet black with the cursor arrow on show with full movement, but nothing else, your thoughts & help will I assure you would be most welcome. Cry

dannyjks: Thanks for taking an interest, but I've tried that, have also tried the rebuild, I've tried most of the tutorials except sfc /scannow, don't know if that is appropiate. something has loaded because I get the default screensaver, but as soon as I move the mouse I get the black screen, I haven't a clue what's going on. Beginning to agree, will look into using HDD as a slave & fitting & installing the O/S on another sata HDD, anyway thanks for your help. Cry

On reflection, if I did make this HDD a slave, would I be able to access some of my folders? Huh?

Rember If you are setting the hard drive as a slave in the computer to tell the hard drive it is a slave by putting the juper in the correct place otherwise it will not work correcly.

Kind Regards

Thanks for the input, aware of the jumper settings, having the day off computing, wil probably set aside the weekend to configure eveything, and will cherry pick whatI want to re-load. Years ago I used to do this quite often with some off the dodgy operating systems, but the last few years what with XP, Vista, & Win 7, I tend to let them run & run, will post when a successful conclusion has been reached.
