Good day all,

I have an Acer laptop with Vista home premium installed.  Couple things.  I don't have back-up or restore disks.. they are somewhere but only God knows...  The computer did not come with Vista program... Vista will try to load then go back to the scree that asked start windows normally or safe mode etc. and it will keep up the loop.  It does not have sp installed.  I have tried to run MSDart Tools but no luck.

Any suggestions..

Thanks a lot...

Michael

Have you got any restore points in your system volume information folder? if so you might be able to use these.

Hi Brian,   Azn

When I used the system restore in system recovery options, it states that there are no restore points.  Which isnt true because that function has always been used and on..  Any suggestions???   Embarrassed

Can you borrow a Windows CD and do a repair install?

do you have any registry backups or any other type of backups?

Try this system restore below

How to perform a Manual System Restore in Vista

1. Boot to the Windows Recovery Environment and select the Command Prompt

2. At the prompt enter the following commands:

cd windows\system32\config

3. At the prompt cd windows\system32\config> enter the following:

ren default default.old
ren sam sam.old
ren system system.old
ren security security.old
ren software software.old

cd regback

4. At the prompt C:\windows\system32\config\regback> enter the following:

copy default c:\windows\system32\config
copy sam c:\windows\system32\config
copy system c:\windows\system32\config
copy security c:\windows\system32\config
copy software c:\windows\system32\config

5. Close the command prompt window and reboot the computer

 Azn Brian,

Thank you for your prompt response.  I appreciate it greatly....

I tried what you mentioned and I am now receiving this error message:

error code c0000218 cannot load the hive file

SystemRoot\system32\Config\Software  or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

Any suggestions...

Thanks again.....

Can you post system spec?
is this a new build or have you been running this setup for some time without any problems?
made any changes to the system lately? updated, or install any new apps? added any new hardware?

Sorry for all the questions, just trying to find out whats been going on with the computer.

Have you run these yet?

1. Boot the computer with your Windows installation disc

2. When you are prompted to select Repair or Recover, press R.

3. Type the Administrator password when prompted.

4. At the command prompt, type CHKDSK /R, and then press Enter.

5. Read the results, and then take any steps that you must take to complete the process. You may need to run CHKDSK /F instead to fix the problem.

6. Restart the computer, and see if Windows works now.

 Azn Brian,

The laptop has had the same configuration since it was purchased.  No new installs, app or hardware added for months.  No problem about the questions..That is true troubleshooting and I appreciate them..

When I run the chdsk /r or /f  it asks if I want to dismount the volume?Huh?

do I click y or n

Thanks,

Michael

Good day Brian,

Did the chdsk /r and /f  no errors......

and tried to reboot... still the same error

error code c0000218 cannot load the hive file

SystemRoot\system32\Config\Software  or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.  Shocked

Anything further that I could try???

I can put the hd in an enclosure and access all of the files easily so I dont think the hd is bad...  I am clueless at this point....

Sorry for the trouble and thanks for your help.

Now that you have backed all your data up...you can now put the laptop back to factory settings.
Important Note: all data will be wiped from the laptop, so make sure your fully backed up.

Try these below

Acer Recovery Instructions
________________________________________
Here is the standard Acer Recovery Instructions

1. Power on the machine
2. At the white ACER BIOS screen, hold the “Alt” key and press the “F10” key simultaneously to start Acer eRecovery
3. Once eRecovery has loaded, click “Restore to Factory Default Settings”
4. Click “OK” to continue
5. From here, the eRecovery process will update all the data on the C: drive and restore a fully functional factory image (approximately 10 minutes).
6. Once eRecovery has run, press “OK” to reboot unit

 Azn Brian,

Thank you very much for all of your assistance!!!!!  You are one of a kind Sir.

I tried what you said, unfortunately I had to take 100 more steps because it wouldn't boot up using the alt f10.  I used erd60 to do a mbr restore then the recovery manager came up.... Couldn't remember the password... so did a search and you did a fantastic video on Using slax... that didn't work for me the partition with the recovery image was hidden.....

so I followed these steps.. located at: http://www.ehow.com/how_5838444_reset-acer-erecovery-password.html

Posted if anyone else with an acer has this problem as well... It didn't give me a password, but what it did do was unhide the F drive.. used Erd60 to locate the file that you specified in your video then saved it to the C drive since in erd you cant open a text file.. then put the hd in an enclosure opened the file and the rest is history..

Thanks again for all your help.

Have a great weekend.

Cheers,

Michael

This is a very good example of the OP providing clear, precise information that relates specifically to the problem he was experiencing, in his initial post.

Giving good feedback when he ran up against a new problem and following all advice to the letter, resulting in a swift and successful conclusion.

This enabled detailed advice to be given to him from the outset, saving the advisor a lot of time and guesswork, and frustration on the part of the OP.

This post demonstrates the value of providing the right information at the right time and following advice exactly and posting back if you run up against another problem.

A perfect model for all posters to follow. PLEASE COPY!

WELL DONE Micheal
