I am having an issue when trying to re-install vista on my laptop. I have a Dell XPS M1730, it was running pretty slow so i decided to wipe it clean and re-install vista.

I ran the Vista installation disc through to the part where you get the option to format the HD. I formated it to completely wipe it then went to install and i got a message saying "Windows is unable to find a system volume that meets it's criteria for installation" Since getting this message i tried deleting the partition and creating a new one but and formatting that one but i am still having no luck. Aslo since this occured on restarting the laptop if i don't boot from CD i get the BOOTMGR is missing error message (i'm not overly fussed about that message as i know how to fix it).

I have also run a full diagnostic since getting this error using the utilities disc also provided with the laptop and everything checked out fine

If anyone has any idea how to fix this please let me know asap

Thankyou for the welcome.

and wow, i really wasn't expecting such a quick response time. Vista is currently installing as i type. According to my understanding the partiton deactivated itself and all i had to do was reactivate it in diskpart. That link was really usefull to me but it may not be to others depending on peoples understanding of command prompt. Although i am sure you could find a tutorial on youtube or something like that. Anyways thanks again for your help Britec much appriciated
