Hi, Your tutorial is exactly what I was looking for regarding the HAL.DLL and Boot.INI error. However I have a problem when i enter the Recovery console. When it prompts me for an Administrator password I cannot bypass this part. I used to have one set here in the BIOS, but thought removed it.
I have also recently deleted the Admin password in the Bios, therefore ensuring I dont need one and press enter. However the recovery console advises "Invalid Password" when I hit enter. Please please help me to bypass this stage. I have a Dell Dimension 5000 and have even tried taking the jumper out of the motherboard, but this doesnt work either??
I would be very grateful for your advice here as I have tried everything I can think of.
Thanks in advance
Steve

I'm no expert on this stuff but i believe removing the cmos battery should clear this, i'm sure somebody will be around soon that knows more but i think that's how it is.

Edit:
Unless what your talking about is the admin password you entered when installing windows, in which case i don't know, sorry.

 Azn 007

welcome to the forum

Have you read this post?

http://www.briteccomputers.co.uk/forum/tutorials-and-how-to/how-to-fix-missing-or-corrupt-system32hal-dll/

Also to remove any forgotten BIOS password your have to remove the cmos battery inside the computer case for a 1min or so, this should remove the bios password.

Also to remove your admin password that you forgot, your have to use software to do this to recover this or change it.

Hi AT and Britec, thank you both for your posts in response to my damn frustrating issue.
Firstly AT, I removed the Cmos to attempt to clear the ADMIN password in the BIOS as you suggested. The result is that there is no windows password stored in my second harddrive Windows operating system, within the User Account part of Windows. This hard drive is fine and currently only allowing me to use the PC normally, but I am still unable to start up my Windows XP on the first hard drive that contains all my photos, videos and files etc. (Which I havent backed up for quite some time) Doh, Silly me eh. Lesson learned Wink

My Issues Britec is with the Recovery console part in your instructions.
1: I have a bootable Windows XP CD and I proceed to boot from the CD...
2: I enter the option of R for the Recovery console... All Good
3: I enter option 1, which is C:Windows
4: Now here is where the issue is...... When prompted for the Administrator password... Bearing in mind that I have removed the password (apparently) within the BIOS settings, when I hit ENTER (for no password) the damn PC advises INVALID PASSWORD!
How can this happen, if I have removed the ADMIN password within the BIOS??
My Bios settings even advise passwords not set when i enter set up?
There are no other passwords set at all (apparently) within the password section of the BIOS.
I have hunted the internet for Bios password reset on a Dell Dimension and they advise to change the jumper from pins 1&2, to 2&3.
Thats all great, but my MOB only has 2 pins in total?? I have tried removing the jumper completely, but still no joy!
Dell support have been completely useless in assisting on this.
I would be so grateful if you know why this may be happening and get me passed this bit to continue with the tutorial you kindly posted, as I know I have a Boot.INI error and the HAL.DLL error and I could certainly fix it from your instructions.
If you need any PC specs, or additional info, please ask.
Thank you so much in advance.

Hi Britec, Thank you gain for your response.
I have downloaded the ERD Commander ISO and have ran it on the problem PC.
I restored the system by roll back in ERD commander and then tried a full restore once in safe mode.
The result is now I can boot up the PC in F8 Safe Mode, but the PC will not start in normal windows bootup, even after attempting a restore. I just get a black blank screen.
I cannot kick the PC into "Recovery console" as I am not sure if you understand the issue clearly, but I cannot get past the Administrator password in this section.
There appears to be a password stored in the BIOS, yet everything points to the "Administrator password " is Not Set in the BIOS. Therefore this is not an option for me. As in my previous post, I advised that I have removed the Cmos, and the jumper, but all to no avail.
There appears to be so many different ways on the internet to fix a boot, but I am a little worried and confused which is the best option to take, as most advise using the "recovery console" that I cant get past, due to the Admin Password issue!
I'm not too clever with working with partitions and amending a Boot.ini error and wondered if you could point me to simple instructions? Currently I do not get the Boot.ini error, or the HAL.DLL error, but I believe these are still an issue behind the blank boot up screen im getting?
Your help and advice would be much appreciated once again.
Thank you again in advance. Steve

OK, so heres an update. I went to the option to repair my installation of Windows XPwith the CD inserted and took the option to repair an existing installation. I had to take this option being as i didnt have an "Administrator Password" to enter the Recovery console.
This has solved the issue and after numerous updating from Microsoft, I am finally back up and running with no issues.
Woohoo.
Thanks for any input from previous posters.
