To get straight to it,  I have the blue screen of death it says system\system32\config\software
I'm currently im the middle of editing a film and am getting push behind schedule. Ive put in the cd hit repair and it says C:\miniNT instead of C:\Windows
here is a video of it I uploaded.
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FliLrO800U0" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FliLrO800U0</a>
I want to reboot it with the the CD but to make things worse I don't have 4 gigabytes to install the new OS (operating system). So i'm stuck not able to boot my computer.

Welcome to the forum

What you have is a corrupted registry and i think your C:\miniNT is your recovery partition which has some how changed to your C:\ drive
I have seen this type of error when booting into recovery console and only giving you a option of E:\I386 or E:\miniNT or C:\miniNT and other variations
This is not going to be easy for you to fix without a fresh install of Windows. Here is a mircosoft article on how to fix a currupt registry. http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=307545

you can follow this video on fixing corrupt registry

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMndA_ND9_A" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMndA_ND9_A</a>

What I suggest is boot into a preinstalled environment with something like puppy linux, this is a free app to download and use. burn and boot to this cd and see if you can see your data on that drive. If you can see your data then backup what you need to a external hard drive. while you in that preinstalled environment where is your data? whats the drive letter? also try a check the boot.ini file to see what it looks like.

This is a sample of a default Boot.ini file from a Windows XP Professional computer.
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

another option that might be open to you is a reapir install

To start the "Repair Install" follow below:

1) Boot from CD-ROM Drive (Press any key to boot from CD...)

2) Wait for setup to load files, when the first screen comes up press "ENTER" to continue with setup.

3) Press F8 to continue (EULA Agreement)

4) Now select the installation you wish to do the repair on, usually it will be "C:\WINDOWS "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" but in your case ti will be different.

5) Press "R" to begin the Repair on this installation.

6) Setup will then check drive c:\ and then delete system files, after this it will then copy the new files and begin setup.

7) During setup you will be prompted to enter certain information. As this is a "Repair" you shouldnt have to enter a product key.

8.) After setup is complete, reboot and see how things work.

NOTE: After setup is complete you will have to reinstall Service Pack 2 if its installed now, and most important when setup is complete it may ask you to create user accounts, SKIP this step so it will not remove the accounts your currently have

Important Note:
When prompted as to if you want to partition DO NOT PRESS ENTER HERE, THIS IS WHERE YOU PRESS R FOR REPAIR OF THIS INSTALLATION, PRESSING ENTER HERE WILL REPLACE YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM AND ALL USER ACCOUNTS

if all else fails and you have your backed up your data then just do a fresh install

Huh? I installed PuppyLinux and I found my files. But I cant do anything with them. I want to delete some files to make room to reinstall windows but it doesn't allow you to delete files.
I also followed your video (recover from a corrupt registry...) I installed ubcdc4win following your video, and when it came time to BUILD so I can install it to a cd it had 2 errors and 3 warnings (that I couldn't fix) so I couldn't use that program Embarrassed
I am going to try the repair install, but i'm really nervous that it's going to delete all of my data. (my data is VERY VERY IMPORTANT, because i'm making a film, and family data is on there. I realize that you told me it wont delete my data but I just want to make sure because If I loose my data then...I'm Messed up.

Thanks for your time in helping me please let me know what you think of all this. You Rock

also I have all of my cd's if that helps.

  Azn

If you do have your XP Install CD then you can,as Brian says, do a Repair Install WITHOUT LOSING ANY OF YOUR DATA. The only Data that will be lost is any Service Packs/Updates that you had installed before you got your problem. This means that you will have to reinstall them when you have successfully done your Repair Install.

Make sure you follow the instructions exactly as outlined in Brians post #2.

Cheers,HTH,

ticker

I tried to do the repair install, but I don't have the 1033 megabytes required to reinstall .(I use up a lot of space:)   ) It says that I have 0MB. I taped it so you have a clear perspective of whats the problem.

So I want to try to delete files I don't need using puppy Linux, but I don't know how. Is there a way to delete old files like videos and sound effects that take up a lot of space using puppy linux, or any other program?

Boot to Puppy Linux CD, once loaded your see a desktop of puppy linux looks a bit like windows desktop.
once there you should see your hard drives, double click on the drive that you want to delete files from (this will be your c:\ drive)
Note: DO NOT wipe data from the recovery drive
navigate to the location of the files your going to delete and bob's your uncle

Now restart with Windows CD  and try a repair install again.

P.S. might be a good idea to backup your files first by making a image of the drive incase it goes tits up....you can use redobackup which is free, do you have a external hard? if not your have to use DVD Disc's. This way your data will be safe, you never know something could go wrong with the repair install.

http://redobackup.org/

And if all else fails with your data all safe you can the do a System Recovery by putting the computer back to factory settings

best of luck

Ive decided to do a complete reinstall of windows and set i  to default, but.........when I put in the cd it says it cant find my hard drive.(It just started doing this today). I downloaded and installed redobackup, and when I want to format or reinstall windows it says "cant find hard drive". So I cant reinstall my system, and puppy Linux doesn't work because out of the blue it cant find my hard drive. So really my computer is a vegetable...It cant do anything.

It's different every time. Half the time it says _Primary Master:None and the other half it Primary Master(Then it says my Hard Drive info, I just don't want to type the whole thing out).
P.S. My screen doesn't say exactly that buts very similar.
