Hi there ,I have been having some problems the last month on how to fix my partners laptop ,and was wondering if anyone could help .

He received this message one day last month - Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt :/windows /system 32 /config /system .

From what Iv been reading so far ,most people seem to point out that I should re-boot from the installation cd . I have the cd ,but my cd drive does not read cd's anymore and hasn't done for over a year now . This hasn't posed any problems till now ,as we mainly transfer things from one computer to the other using our usb stick (movies and so on) . So last week he bought himself a flash drive ,hoping to be able to re-install xp on his laptop . But we are unsure on how to do this ,or if this is even the best way to go about getting his laptop back up and running .

We have read up about UBDCwin ,but again ,we are unsure how to do this - never mind understand It . Im also running Vista ,while his laptop is running XP . So the two computers are completely different (at least to me)

We have a few programs recommended by others - UBCD4WinV360 / CDBurnerXP ...... We have figured out we have to re-boot his laptop by burning an iso image onto a flash drive (bought a 2 gig one for this). But truth be told ,we are useless when It comes to this ...... we barely understand anything said (Laugh) and just plain don't know where to start! Although we have been watching the relevant videos on you tube by yourself (that's how we ended up here)

Can any one help ? Or could we just be pointed in the right direction ?

His Laptop Stats ...
Siemens Fujitsu Amilo

That's about all we can remember as Its been a month since we could last get into his laptop . We do know though ,that it is up to date with all upgrades and service packs .

I do know one thing though .......... I was probably a blond in a past life  :Smiley

My parents laptop couldn't recognise the drive and it was missing. I was trying to burn a disc using the vista own burner built into the laptop. Because the drive wasn't recognised I had to do a little fixing myself.

I 'googled' my question with the name of the drive that was in the laptop. Basically all was needed was a quick registry edit and reboot and the drive appeared again and is now working.

I do know out of previous experience what I had to do because I had to burn an iso image onto a disc using a preferred program 'Imgburn'. I have Nero 6 already installed but this program seemed to have conflicted with my nero program. I found this out when I went to burn something using Nero and an error came up.

I un-installed Imgburn, performed a registry clean to clean out any dead values or keys which Imgburn may have left behind. Peformed a registry edit, saved, rebooted and hey presto..its all working again.

My advice to you is....

1. Google your question which mentions your make of CD Rom drive
for example.....
(i) My TSSC Corp CD ROM drive has disappeared
(ii) My TSSC Corp CD ROM isn't working

Look for an answer which may involve using the registry edit option. Most people will give a good description on how to do this.

Good Luck, I will keep my eye on your inputs on this and help where and when I can

Click Start, Run and type regedit.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet1\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet2\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Find the values on the right hand side screen "UpperFilters" and/or "LowerFilters"

Highlight and right-click on it. Select Delete and click OK to the warning message.

Not sure this will always fix the same issue above missing or corrupt :/windows /system 32 /config /system
