Hello all,
My apologies if this is indeed already posted, but I couldn't find this issue on the forums.  I'm currently running Windows XP SP3 on a lenovo T61.  I encountered a trojan fakealert this evening, and was scanning and cleaning first with McAfee and Super Antispyware.  When SAS completed it's scan, I updated my McAfee and started a new scan.  Then all of the bogus pop ups flooded my screen.  Shortly after, my PC completely froze up and I had to cold boot it without shutting it down.

Now, I get that unmountable_boot_volume message.  I followed the Britec video for repairing this up to the recovery console screen.  The first 3 lines display, but no drive is listed, and I'm not given a prompt in which to type.  The last line of text on the screen is "Type EXIT to quit..."  No fans or activity LEDs are going, and it will sit like this seemingly forever.  Any possible way to fix this hiccup in loading RC?  Also, will it make a difference if my OS is running SP3 but I'm booting from an SP2 boot disk?

Thank you in advance!
Josh

Much appreciated.  Unfortunately, I am trying to do exactly this.  I get through the process slowly, but smoothly up to this point...

The system stops running after the "Type EXIT to quit..." line, and I can't input anything. It never lists a drive or gives me the chance to select one.  I can't even follow the prompt on the screen to exit.  Is there a way to free up this section of the recovery console?

I also started running an HDD diagnostic, which seems to not be working properly.  So far I've gotten "Error code 0000: Read verification failed".  The Main hard disk drive shows       HDD0:HITACHI HTS722010K9SA00

Have you tried to do a rollback? might be worth a try.

I appreciate all of the helpful suggestions.  I think I'm going to have to send this out for Hardware service.  When running recovery console, it freezes identifying a drive...  When doing a HDD diagnostic it says there is "1 error found, call for service"...  When attempting to locate drive during the Windows XP repair install, instead of listing the location and name of a previous windows install, it only lists C: Partition1 [Unknown]     95393MB (95393 MB free)...  Point being, I think my hard drive needs to be replaced.  If I'm wrong, please let me know.  Otherwise, I am truly grateful for the helpful suggestions.

Thanks,
Josh

Could well be a problem with the Hard disk, try using diagnostic software to test hard drive.

Have you tried FixMBR?

I tried the HDD diagnostic tool.  I held a button down during startup long enough for it to open a troubleshooting prompt through windows.  This gave me the "1 error found on hard disk. call for service" message.  I have not tried FixMBR.  If it runs out of the recovery console I likely won't be able to use it.  How do I proceed with FixMBR?

I still have no functionality in the recovery console.  I can't select a destination drive to run and repairs because it will not identify the HDD as a potential drive location.  Is it possible to repair anything HDD related in the BIOS setup utility?  This is where I did the HDD diagnostic.  It completed the diagnostic, but verified the presense of 1 error.  Is it a possibility that this error could be within the boot/recovery sector on the HDD?

He's a question...

Is it possible, if I remove the HDD, connect it via USB adaptor to my desktop, for me to backup my files and run the recovery console on it from my desktop HDD?
