Hello everyone, ive had this problem before and was able to re-install windows on another harddrive and it fixed the problem on my the sata hard drive array.

i have 1 ide drive with 2 windows installations  (1 working)
and 2 sata drives in raid array (stripe) with one installation

the array is working properly and i can access all files.
im thinking it has something to do with my boot.ini files

here is the boot.ini on my IDE drive , the sata array does not contain one.
---------------------
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS2
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS2="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
----------------------

the one i want to use is the last entry, any one have any ideas ?

thanks for the help !

Hi james123 welcome to the forum

I have changed the boot.ini and add the last ones detaisl like you wanted, let me know if thats what you wanted.

Simple boot.ini for a Windows XP SP2 system

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

Hey, Thanks for the help. Great thing you are doing helping people with this forum  You Rock

i was able to get windows working on my raid array last night.
i had to use the windows cd, and a disk with my raid drivers on it. then i was able to see the copy of windows on that drive and repaired it using bootcfg.
now im curious how i get rid of the 3 previous boot list entries that come up when i start the computer ( ive got 3 new ones created with bootcfg and the 3 old ones)

Your need to edit the boot.ini file

ok, thanks. ive got a couple more questions.
the boot.ini only gets installed on my IDE drive, while the drive i use windows on has no boot.ini. does this make sense ?

also force of habit, i tried to enter the old choice on the boot menu yesterday... it didnt work got the "hal.dll " error
now today i try it again ... it works, and then when i restart and try to use the new boot menu i set up a couple days ago that one comes up with new " configuration "error message.
any incite in to why my boot menu keeps changing ?

Sorry for delay. Once you edit the boot.ini file it should not change by its self?
