 Azn solidstryker

Welcome to the forum

A easy way to get round this is to put the hal.dll file onto a pen drive.. then boot to a preinstalled environment and copy the file in system32 from preinstalled environment.
you can use puppy linux or windows live cd or ubcd4win etc etc puppy linux is easy because its already made just boot to cd with puppy linux, mount your c: drive when at the desktop of puppy linux.
and drop file in.

or you can use ERD Commander to try a roll back to a earlyer time when the system was running ok, or you can do a repair install this way you dont lose your data or take drive out and put it in another computer as a slave and fix it that way, or use files in volume system information to put system back.

couple of other was but that should do it.

what do you want way do you want to try? and do you need more info?

I should have mentioned that my pc won't boot because of this missing or corrupted hal.dll error. A repair install is my best option but I dont know how to do it without deleting the partition on my HDD. I have the recovery cd, and have seen your video on how to expand the hal.dll but I don't know how to log onto administrator because it doesn't prompt me to. And I can't alter the boot.ini because of that error. My only other source to connect to the web is through my ps3, so I can't really download anything, and want to use the recovery disk to fix this.                       Thanks Embarrassed

 Azn there,

Doing an XP REPAIR INSTALL does not delete your partition on the HDD. The repair installation just repairs the operating system and does not touch your data, installed programs, personal information, or settings. It just repairs the operating system.

However, the repair install will remove any updates you have previously installed that are not included on the CD. It may be necessary to reactivate your Windows XP as well, for this you will need your Product Key.

When the repair installation has completed, you will  have to download all of the updates and Service Packs from Microsoft Windows Update, because they are all removed during repair. You need to be quick getting Windows Updates and Service Packs however since MS is stopping support for XP in a couple days time.

Check out the tutorial here:
http://www.briteccomputers.co.uk/forum/tutorials-and-how-to/how-to-perform-a-windows-xp-repair-install/msg868/#msg868

After accepting the EULA, F8 on screen 5,then on screen 7, press R for Repair,do not press ESC(if you do XP installs a duplicate installation of XP , and you will not be able to access to your files, users and will cause all sorts of problems and will not run properly.

Cheers,HTH,

ticker

Thanks for the replys,  You Rock
but unfortunately the repair isn't working. I guess the recovery console didn't detect that windows was installed, and would automatically prompt me to delete the partition instead, and it didn't give me the option to repair installation.

Maybe its also worth mentioning that my XP version is OEM. And my initial problem was that the disk drive wasn't detected, and after I tried to "FIXBOOT" commands in recovery console, this second problem came with the hall.dll.

I just reformatted my computer instead, and now its working fine, just lost some school project documents, but it doesn't matter since I am already done with them.

My question now is what could have caused this initial problem?

Funny thing is, I don't have a clue because it happened when my brother was on my computer, and I am guessing it was a virus from him going to a sketchy site?

Thanks
